does virtual dj 5 have variable on the fly loop times? like what traktor has.
What i mean is, in traktor I can use press the loop in button to cut the loop from 8 beats to 4, then again from 4 beats to 2, then again to 1 beat and then half beats and so on...
With the looping on my DMC version of 5 which came with my hercules rmx I cant seem to do this, just set a loop in and out point and nothing else.

Yes VDJ can shorten or lengthen loops. Not sure what the original keyboard shortcuts are as I've changed mine to * delete = default 4 beat loop on off, (numeral keys along top of keyboard) 8 = 32 beats, 7 = 16 beats, 6 = 8 beats, 5 = 4 beats (same as del button), 4 = 2 beats, 3 = 1beat, 2 = 1/2 beat, 1= 1/4 beat. Plus press 1 again and it cuts beat half again to 1/8 beat. Also by pressing the same number key again will release loop, except for key 1 as I've just stated.
Example of how I use loop point shortcuts. . . I find the first beat of the track I'm queuing then press delete key. I then release turntable to match beat. If all sounds good then I press the 7 key when I hear current track hit a 32 beat mark i.e 3 bars of boom tiss boom tiss, then on last bar boom boom tiss tiss.
This gives me a 16 beat loop in time with the 16 beat patterns of current track.
But as I'm listening to the queued track I hear it starts with an annoying cymbol which doesn't go well with the 16 beat patterns of playing track!! No fear as I also have as a shortcut on the (,) and (.) keys to move my loop-in point back or forward 4 beats on the track that is NOT highlighted! So I press delete key again (takes 16 beat loop back to 4 beats) then press insert key (above delete key and shortcut for change highlighted deck), then press (.) key 3 times (I think) then press insert key again to highlight queued deck, press 7 key again after I hear current track get to end of 16 or 32 beat pattern (see boom tiss above for crap explanation). After practice this can easily be done in the time it takes for track playing to advance 16 beats.
This gives me a 16 beat loop in time with the 16 beat patterns of current track, that is 16 beats further into the queued track.
Blend in using whatever EQing technique then when ready press the 7 key again to release the loop.
This method is best served chilled on the rocks with a slice of orange, hehehe.

Just found a link from DJJB to default keyboard shortcuts and a pic to match. It's dated 2005 so just check it's still current.

I'm fairly sure I've been using this technique since version 3.4. Hope that helps answer your question. I guess just try the default keyboard shortcuts listed above to see.
