I'm used to using a Numark CDN88. I've just been told the Denon's "key lock" or whatever it's called is nothing like the way Denon set theirs up.
When I beatmix, I use the jog wheels to adjust the tempo, sometimes spinning them hard. On the Numark, it made no difference to the pitch/sound, but the Denon/VDJ don't seem to offer this same luxury.
Is there any kind of plug in or is it possible to design one to match the Numark CD player I've grown used to?

I'm pretty sure this mapper has a feature to kepp the pitch constant when using the jog wheel. It's got loads of settings and customisations, so it's best to read the instruction file that comes with it.

Ideally, you should try to avoid making big adjustments to a song that is playing out live. You should use your headphones to preview the song that you will be bringing in and get the song beatmatched as closely as possible with the one that's playing live. Once you have done that, only very minor adjustments should be necessary (If any at all), which can be done without being noticeable.
With the HC4500 custom mapper, there is an option similar to what you are describing. This automatically turns on key lock temporarily while pitch bending so that the bend is not noticeable. This is off by default because it can create pops/clicks on lower performance computers.
It can be turned on via user parameters (Please see the end of the HC4500 user manual included with the mapper for details on how to get into and change these.) The parameter you need to change is #40 'Pitch Bend Key Lock'
Alternatively, you can simply keep key lock switched on permanently.

Brilliant - I'll give that a go. I'm a competent beat mixer, having worked in real nightclubs the best part of 20 years ago. I mix everything from 60s rock n roll to the latest top 40 stuff, and I do it on the fly. Some of the older original tracks don't have normal 100% consistent beats on the intro, such as Start Me Up (Rolling Stones) and constant adjustments are necessary.
I'll have a look at the setting you've suggested as I really don't want to have to relearn what I've been doing since forever. :)
