Topic: LIGHTS??

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I have about 1000 dollars and I want to buy at least four lights that are the same. I am a mobile dj.

A friend told me to becareful when buying lights because some lights can go bad if they get moisture from the fog or dew at night. Is this true?

I do not have a light controller.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

there are a couple of brands over in the states that are always mentioned, can't think of there names just now, but definately go with leds, most have built in sound to light and are dmx.

edit, they have a great life span before replacing of about 50 - 100,000 hours

yes, leds are the future, but expensive.

A lot of people like the acme impossibLED, looks pretty good and arn't too expensive here in the UK (I guess it will be similar over in the states).

It kind of depends on your usage though. Is it for a mobile DJ who does weddings, etc. or for a nightclub?

I do backyard parties and indoor

If your just starting out with lighting I would recommend the American DJ Revo III:

They cover a lot of space, use LEDs, are DMX controllable, and can be picked up for under $250.00

Where are you playing, in the Amazon rainforest? That is the only place you would have to worry about dew. Well, playing in your shower, is not a good idea either. If they are on, you do not have to worry about dew. On the other hand, you do not want to keep ANY equipment in a cold environment, and then load it into your warm van. Doing this repeatedly, will shorten the life of your equipment.

Someone mentioned Acme earlier.
They make some good budget gear and have an LED range. I use some of their 500w effects and have not had any issues with them bar the odd lamp change.
The big plus with the LED effects is obviously a big reduction in power consumption and a light scorce that lasts a very long time. If you can, try and see the effects in action before you buy as some of the cheaper led units can suffer from a lack of light output.

For the record a humid atmosphere is something that most mobile gear has to cope with at some time. Comming out of a cold van into a hot club will have all your equipment dripping in condensation. Its not good and in some cases can be dangerous. If it gets damp try allowing yourself some extra setup time to let your gear warm up to the temperature in the room before you switch anything on. If your working inside or outside allow plenty of cool-down time before you pack up.

hope this helps

One thing that gets me is cables that go stiff ant brittal from being left in a vans over night. Plastic also! plugs ect

Gear really takes some punishment.
