Topic: Notebook shock absorber, to minimise bass vibrations!

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi Folks,

I'm looking at purchasing a laptop in the next few weeks, which is exciting I know!

I was wondering if anyone had any advice regarding potential damage to a laptop caused by bass vibrations (I know a lot of clubs set their bass bins next to/underneath the stage)

Can you get something in the form of a shock absorber for your laptop? like a mat to go underneath your laptop or similar?

Something like those'free float' cushions you can get for vinyl decks, but for a laptop? see; http://www.udmdjstore.co.uk/details.asp?ProductID=31115

Or does bass vibration not really effect the laptops operation? I know I'm paranoid about having my sub sitting next to my pc but I know the desk vibrates a hell of a lot and I don't know if thay would effect a laptop more if it were on the desk!

I know most good laptops come with shock detection, but I don't really want the hardrives heads parking themselves every few seconds!!

I guess I'm looking for a device that will minimise vibrations to the laptop?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

If you've the choice, buy it! Vibrations are never good!

I've been DJ'ing with laptops since 1999 in pubs, clubs and also mobiles with a 3k Peavey system.

I have had no ill effects with vibrations whatsoever. I tend to replace the HDD every 18 months or so anyway, but I don't think you need to worry. I have never had the HDD park thingy, but it's probably better turned off anyway.

A cheap bit of foam underneath will do the job nicely if you want to suppress some of the vibrations.

Thanks for your feedback, it's nice to hear from long term DJ's who haven't had problems with vibrations !

I used laptops for 10 years with BPM Studio, PCDJ Red, PCDJ FX and VDJ and NEVER had any problem with the laptop itself.....I did however have a problem with a external hard drive vibrating too much in a club in Salt Lake a number of years ago, we set it on a stack of bar napkins and that cleared the problem right up.

I would never use foam under a laptop due to potential cooling problem...I am going to be buying a laptop again here in the next month and I was thinking about getting a laptop cooler and mount the feet from a turntable under each corner I think that would do the trick since the feet are designed for vibration isolation...and I'll get the extra cooling.
