I get booked basically because i specialize in mixing Videos
most times than not I am booked as special guest along side audio DJs
One of the issues with videos especially in the Reggae department is that many of the popular hits just dont have videos.. a few good ones perhaps....and recreating a vid for one song can take several tedious hours to get just right
Of course.. i have all the latest audios with me as well.. but I am not really booked to play AUDIO only...
At a point when you can read the crowd and know what they want.. and the Dj playing is just not seeing it .. what a pain...a real drag
The vids I have will not work here........This is where the conflict comes in.....what do i do..... do i go audio?..... lift the vibes of the party??
or do i just go back to my vids.. and leave the other djs to work it out..
Following my instincts.. i pulled up a few vids of persons dancing in my clip bank... and decide to do AUDIO between the VIDEOS I have.. worked like a charm
Crowd did not mind.. place was in a frenzy.. Promotor had no issues either... (visuals were being shown..). in fact i got booking for same venue... same night.
However.. I got shot down from the other Djs about stepping into their territory...
even days after the event....they were still fuming...
Mind you if they were dealing with the crowd as they should.....I never would have even gone there..
So i told them.. that I gave the crowd what they wanted..... besides it was my turn to play anyways....
Question... what should I have done. .could i have done otherwise????

Do whatever works IMHO. Sprucing plain videos up with visuals is all part of the game!

i'd have gone with the crowd. if they're enjoying what you're playing, they will soon forget that youre playing music video or visuals on a screen.
though you got me thinking about regge visuals...
maybe some shadow rastas?
or a cut up of ub40 visuals, if youre plain ub40 audio? you could take that idea to other artists, too.
... as for the other DJs? the night is so short, keep the boss happy, you could get more play-time...

well one night in particular I stuck to strictly videos.. at a gig....(only vid jock)
I started out the party early... kept early patrons glue to screen and dancing along
had me some Marcia Griffiths - Electric Boogie..Casper Slide etc.... R.Kelly step in the name of love, happy people etc
and the place was rocking by 11:30 pm.. every body dancing..
play until 1.
then another dj came and continued to kept the party rocking.. only the disappearance of the vids you would know that the dj changed
another dj came and kept it rocking
then another came and the party went off the recter scale..... this dude had the crowd..... up in an uproar...... man he was like 500% up
basically he went through every genre... played every big hit.. old new the works.. 2 mins here... 2 mins there.. (
of course it it now my time again.. for another half an hour.. after what he played
and man did he have a smug on his face.........
Now what do i do... if I play audio.. they gonna think i cannot hack it using vids.... and give this Video mixing thing a bad rap
Moment of truth......... i guess... so i decide.. ok.... VIDS IT IS.... (this is 4:00 am now) - club ends at 5
first vid......crowd went haywire....
2nd vid..... u could not even hear the music over the noise
3rd vid...... this dj face dropped....
In my half hour set.. i drew so many reactions from the crowd
by the way did i tell you that two of these DJs are island Champions in DJ competition?
even in the middle of the dancing craze... these vids drew some crazy hype.. and dancing got even crazier
After I finished... the dj turned around and told me straight up that he has never seen any other dj do that. .and it must have been my vids
Truth be told.. the selections were good.. video or not.. probably would have had the same effect on the crowd... well the videos did help a little.. but fact remain.... I worked the crowd... the other djs worked the crowd
A month after all four of us got at least three back to back gigs... from different promoters because of this one event...
suffice to say... my pay nearly doubles what these audio djs got.
comes with what i offer i guess.. .chuckle... PLAYING VIDS ROCK
