looked good...

was gonna say I'm packing my "lunch box" and coming for another lesson, lol, but you know the connotations of that saying in the UK so I thought otherwise... lol

Indeed, but then almost anything at all can be twisted ;)

Ha ha that was good.

VOB files
An overview to show the logical structure of VOB files, and help you see where all the pieces fit.
MPEG-2 System Stream
A VOB file is an MPEG-2 system stream. This means that it complies 100% with the MPEG-2 system level standard, ISO 13818-1. However, VOB files are a very strict subset of the standard. So while all VOB files are MPEG-2 system streams, not all MPEG-2 system streams comply with the definition for a VOB file.

This is clear as mud, one is almost like the other but the other is not like the one.
love it.

by the way that wasy funny,

Hello to all. I am new to VDJ and The world of forums. I have read every post on this thread and just had some Q's of my own. Any assitance whats so ever is appreciated.

I ripped a few dvds to my pc (just music videos) and the file size read to be 12 GB. I ripped another and the file size read 8 GB.

I am under the impression that a Fully loaded DVD, when Ripped should not take up more than 4.7 GiGs. Right?

Could this have anything to do with the sample rate?

Can any one tell me what i am doing wrong and what i should be doing?

I am using Aimersoft DVD Studio Pack to rip files as .vob

Also, in my atempts to transition to video, I started wondering if i will need any special hardware to run the video out of my pc and to the Projector? or does this all happen on the stereo RCA Jacks running from my PC to the house system at the club?

How good does my Video card have to be to run smoothly. (currently running an Nvidia Ge Force7150m/nForce 630M)

How much Picture quality is lossed from .vob to mpeg4?

Lastly....Will the loss (if any) be noticeable on a flat screen or a projector?

I know this is alot so Thanks in advance.

DVD Rip Pro is a handy tool, although it can be a pain sometimes having to dump to hard drive before extracting chapters, but has it's benefits.

It's provides the option to upgrade quality as defined by the user. Example, the often forgotten audio quality can be set at a 320 bite rate for mp3's compared to the standard 128. Same for the video.

VDJ/Cue has zero problems with playback when using these format variations.

Can that VJ Rip program allow me to upgrade mpeg 2 as well as making life easier with high protection DVDs?

(PLESAE NOTE - It is a criminal offence to play ripped DVD videos files in public. (UK)

use mixmash and get a ppl license...

I'm afraid not, DVD's can have mutliple layers allowing for more storage space. On a single side, a DVD can have up to 2 layers (referred to as a DVD-9), which allows up to 8.54GB of storage.

Hi tayla.. how be?

Was this for me....cos a UK PPL licence will not allow for the change in formats. Unless things have changed recently?

I've been building a back collection to protect my investment from scratched disc's etc with the hope of actually using VDJ when are copyright laws catch up. Pleaseeeeeee say it already has cos carrying case on case of DVD's is doing my tw*t in!

well considering i am a music and video junkie i gig with an external firewire 2 tb drive and i need all my mp3's and vidz on 1 drive. and after ripping over and over i have settled on a divx profile as my choice because as 10,000 videos in mpg-2 and 70,000 mp3's would just be way too big. i tried h264 mp4 and full mpeg2 640x480 and my divx just kills cause it gives me the res i need on big screens and the performance i need to jump and hot cue. mp4 looks killer but hot cueing just lags. Mpeg2 is awesome but just way 2 big to travel with. divx 720x480 with a 192 or higher audio stream seems to be just right for me. No lag and looks great. Oh and i won't do multiple externals cause they seem to sleep. and that causes problems. i know there are programs (which i found here) to keep drives from doing that but i only want to carry one external for play one for back up.

@av1613 this came up about a year and a half back in the forums and when i originally got the ppl license i asked about this, they then got onto their legal department, to cut a long story short they said it would be fine, now i haven't questioned this since but after the holidays you could always give them a call to verify.

Yeah I can totally understand that. MCPS ain't got a freaking clue on the phones. It's scary to think they could be risking lively hoods because they don't even know there own rules. I write to them and ask for a dummies example of the Law...but in writing this time. Will let you know the outcome. Cheers man!

MUCHOS Thank Yous for the info. Feels like I’m getting somewhere on this transition to Video mixing.

Thanks “SBDJ” I am going to check those DVDs to see if they say dual layer on them. I hope they do or I will still be at square one.

“BJtheeDJ” Thank you very much! That was the kind of answer I was looking for in regards to the quality between file types and which is better and why you feel this way. Awesome post! Ripping files as Divx will probably be what i end up doing since it just made so much sense the way you explained it.

I’d really appreciate if you 2 or anyone else would take a stab at the other questions that I am still dealing with. Please keep in mind I am a complete novice to this side of things.

If I have A gig of video and i rip it as a Divx file, what will the file size be after it has been ripped????

They probably won't say on them, but you should be able to see the disc size using windows explorer :)

You'll need to use a video connection from your computer - and which you use will depend on what you are connecting to and what your laptop has. HDMI, DVI, VGA, Component, S-Video or Composite are the usual connections. It is a seperate connection to your audio connections.

A lot of the smoothness will depend on what you want to do. Video playback doesn't require a particularly high end card - what will require more power are when you start using fancy 3D transitions and effects. I would think your card should cope OK.

Entirely depends on your encoding choices, you can make it tiny and low quality, or larger and better quality. Encoding choices will affect all sorts of things such as the quality of the overall image, quality of the black colour, movement in the video and so on. Your best bet is to google some guides on encoding to divx/xvid. Videohelp has a lot of guides, for example:

Hey Thanks for the detailed info "SBDJ"!!!!!!

I checked those DVD's that I ripped and just like you said, they didnt state dual layer or not. However I have not had a chance to load them up again to see what "My Computer" says the file size is.

1000 times Thank you for all your help.

I feel alot better about the steps im taking now.

Greatfully indebted...

Hello again! I hope every one had a Joyfull recieving of the NEW YEAR!!!

I've been doing some reading and was just wondering, which is the software of choice when ripping DVD to Divx???

so far i am looking at these 2, but....

"ImToo DVD Ripper Platinum 5" = I Read some complaints that it is slow and has a pretty bad studder when you use the preview screen.

"VJ Ripper" = cant find any reviews on this one.

Thanks again.

By the way i am tring to rip to Divx based on the recomendations of this thread. Im sorry i dont know how to use the quote feature just yet.

"BJtheeDJ" Posted previously....

"i have settled on a divx profile as my choice because as 10,000 videos in mpg-2 and 70,000 mp3's would just be way too big. i tried h264 mp4 and full mpeg2 640x480 and my divx just kills cause it gives me the res i need on big screens and the performance i need to jump and hot cue. mp4 looks killer but hot cueing just lags.
