been listening to all the issues surrounding the vestax vci-300
have been monitoring the forums especially for this particular controller
especially that i am now interested in setting up another gig machine (mobile)
And seems that many are not satisfied... or at least disappointed.. but agrees that this controller works but has not lived up to the hype..
I have never even laid my eyes on it except for pics....yet i have convinced myself that this controller may be the solution to many mobile video jocks
I simply need a controller that has large enough jogwheels that will at least allow me to do some scratching...(not an expert or anything) but i need that option. with its own sound card... faders etc...(just a laptop.. an external and i am good)
Size of the controller is the main issue... mobility reasons... I get a lot of club plays... and struggle to find space in the dj booths for my current setup.
Regardless of the above frustrations... I can only encourage and ask vdj.. to map the vestax-vci 300 controller and/ or make it native to vdj....
Never can tell... If this could come in the next update of i'd be happy....guess I can't ask Santa Claus for Christmas delivery.. but I hope he does a belated new year delivery
Any recommendations from you guys who have actually owned the vestax-300 and is using it?

problem i had was simple. The VCI-300 was made for itch and works great with itch. If you plan on using other software you will be disapointed. Others have mapped the vci-300 with other software and i found it to not work that great. there is a youtube video with it mapped to traktor scratch that has u pressing so many different combos due to lack of buttons available it seems to not be worth using to dj. I personally would of been happy with the basics, jog wheel and loop support.
so again if you are willing to give up on vdj for itch then the vci-300 is a great choice. I was trying to wait out the whole 'soon it will' but could not. With the NS7 right around the corner (and down the block) and only a couple hundrend dollars more. I think that may be the best option at this point for me.
btw what is your current set up?

I went to town today to buy myself a vci-300. Arrived at the store just to find out they only had one unit left, because it got send back to shop. So i was curios to lay my hands on this little bastard. The guy at the store had it set up like in no time. 2 min max, from out of the box to ready to go. I must say that did impress me. He than let me do my thang with it. I did some research before going to the shop, so i did knew what it can do and what it cant. One thing thats really great is that all the buttons are arranged in a way that is quite logical, everything is where you soppose it to be. The jogs are adjustable, but here´s the first negative thing that caught my eye: the jog-adjust is just a little wheel on a plastic-bar, im sure that this piece will break like matches. After finding a setting that suited me i tried the scratching. I have a solid turntablism-background and it sure is a step into the right direction, it did feel natural, like having a 45-record on a TT. But i had to press onto the jogs so hard to respond that it did become a unnatural feeling. Its just not like having a TT in front of yourself. There have been several other things i did´nt like such as a auto-sync that doesnt work properly, the way that itch is build and only 2in/2out....but its build-in mixer can step up to the competition. It has a VCR-pro crossfader thats real smooth, no problem to do wild crab-scratch-combos. The jogs are also great for scratching if you have the muscles it takes to scratch with the vci. Just dont expect a TT-like scratch. Expect the best scratch done by a controller but its still not as good as a CDJ or TT.
All together i did not buy the vci-300. My advice is to go and check it out in real. I dreamed of having the vci-300, i still love the concept, but it is not for me. I hope the NS7 is as good as they say. Otherwise im clued to my giant turntables :D peace

my current setup is
2 CD Numark AXis 9 Table tops
Time Coded CDs
U46dj Usb Sound cArd
X-session Midi Controller with fader
XP Shuttle 2.0 Dual Core
512 MB Nvidia Vid Card
one of the problems is that i do not have option of testing any controllers.. none are sold in my country
so once bought that is it... it is owned
Therefore my need to get information from all who have used this controller
The size of the jogwheel does matter.. really matter... even if i am far from the average scratcher

the platter sensitivity is controlled with a screw in the back so pressing hard is easilly fixed

@wiz
cant you send it back in case it dont work/ you dont like it/ any other reason. Here in Germany we´re allowed to send back anything ordered over the net within two weeks without any given reason because you cant exactly see what you get in the net, aint that fat? Meaning were allowed to step back from the contract of buying. maybe there is some law in your country that is similar?
The platter size is about a regular 45-record...those 7inch things. It feels good, noway near cheap. they have little grooves on them like a vinylrecord. they are made of ....not plastic, a little bit smoother material, like....smooth plastic.hope you understand. they have a small area around them that is see-through and made of harder plastic. thats the pitch-bend-ring. you dont have to be afraid to hit any button while scratching because everything is very good arranged. i would say it is the best arranged controller available. The jogs feel good. the pressure i had to make doesnt matter, see below.....
@sir
it really has that screw??? OMG! i looked at it but didnt see anything like that. well, i checked it while leaning over it and not trying to fall into the shops table :) i only saw the 2in/2out and the usb etc. i guess if the sellsman would have known that he would be a bit richer and i would have the vci. He did know nothing about this product.... in a dj-dedicated store. But he was able to tell me EVERYTHING they have in the store will be about 50€ more expensive in the new year. So the vci wont be like 699 but 749€. So i decided to rather get the nanopad for 60 bucks than for 110 :D BTW the nanopad is amazing, but thats a different topic ;) peace

Hy wiz,
i use the vci-100 with a m-audio conectiv soundcard, an i loved it.
The vdj mapper work's pretty good but you can also make it more individual with the general midi.
I think you can also with the general midi, make the vci-300 run like you want.
But it's a hell work.
I test at the moment the options for the vci100/vdj.
sadly, i don't get at the moment the same gimmicks over the general midi like vdj has with her own settings inside.
Before i buy the vci100 i had a look at the xponent from m-audio.
http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/TorqXponent.html
It is a really huge controler with also huge jog-wheels.
In vdj is allready a mapper & you can get individual with general midi.
Have a look in youtube for "djmag" and "xponent"
But for me it was too huge and pricy.
Hope i can help a little bit.
Have a good time

mapping the vci-300 did not work the jog wheels lost the scratchability for me........ so aka pointless.
btw the platters on the vci-300 are not the size of 45's (aka 7 inches)
btw aka i said aka far too much in this post

well, if they are´nt 7inch, i would say they get very close to this format. maybe theyre about 6 inch, idk. theyre still the biggest jogs i have seen so far. I think the xponent jogs are a little bit smaller than the vci´s. Tomorrow i will return to the shop, maybe im getting the vci then.
and maybe i will even take a ruler with me so that i can for sure tell the right size of the platter. peace :)

I encourage VDJ to make it native as well.
From your post I was in the same boat I wanted a controller that we portable, and scratchable, IMHO, the VDJ + VCI-300 + MIDI Translator suffices. I had a RMX, and its no comparision, I have lost realatively no functionality and gained scratchable jogs. Of course the scratching is tighter using ITCH but after adjusting my XML file I have found a setting that allows me to scratch decently with VDJ.
From what I can tell if VDJ were to handle 14 bit MIDI, scratching would be pretty much the same tightness as ITCH. As currently its just a little behind, for basic scratch for clubs though its fine, a turntablist would not approve though. For me also the buttons and faders are soooooo much better that the RMX, I think that was my main gripe with the RMX, the buttons had way to much "play". The RMX buttons reminded me of my old TV back in the day when you had to go to the screen to push buttons to change the channel!!

Gentlemen, if I may, patients is needed on this one. Vestax might have an exclusive agreement with Serato for a set period of time, before Vestax would release the xml data to VDJ for native support. Just something to consider.... ;-)

I would disagree here, I have already posted on another thread an XML file to start off with that has pretty much every function already mapped for the VCI-300, and the amount of time it took me to create it was an hour maybe 2 tops. I have spent way more time over the years "tweaking" VDJ......IMHO

even tho its a moot point now ... i used your xml and never got the jog wheels to work

@ DJBEWARE
Could you point me to this basic mapping, did a serach and nothing came up. My friend got his VCi-300 this week so I could try to "re-invent" the wheel so to speak with this unit. From what I have seen so thus far, its pretty solid unit, I cheer for the platter size and not the tiny jogs like the RMX. I do video mixing so I need a dependable midi-controller to control both audio/video fading.
Thanks in advance.

There is this midi mapper you could try, and maybe improve on.

It seems that patience is required....as you suggested TearEmUp
Guess i do not have a choice anyways.
I will continue to wait for the vestax-300 for the moment... haul my not so mobile gig setup around until
unless something else that is better pops up (yes NS7 is on its way.. but too large)
I will also continue to hope that either xml data is released soon so that it can be native to vdj
or that vestax comes out with a version... to the 300 that allows this..
