I remember the first time I saw a DJ mixing two records. It was the summer of 1975 at the park across the street from my apartment while I lived in the Bronx. I was only 10 years old when I first heard Kool DJ Herc. Back then Kool DJ Herc would mix the break beat of funk, soul, rock and blues. I do not remember DJ Herc playing disco. :-}
When my family moved to River Park Towers in the Bronx , I met some friends who like to breakdance, create art on subway cars, and needed a DJ. When my family moved to River Park Towers in the Bronx , I met some friends who like to breakdance, create art on subway cars, and needed a DJ. I was a terrible breakdancing and even worst graffiti artist but knew all the music. Then I heard Grandmaster Flash in the park one summer mixing and scratching records and I ran home and took two turntables (component set and a kiddie turntable), rigged it and ruined my mother records and component set.
At the age of 15, I was paid for my first party at an underground adult night club in the Bronx. Since then, I played throughout the United States at night clubs, military bases, weddings, special events, on the radio and for Special Olympics. I won DJ contests, ran a record pool, became a promoter for new artists and an advocate for hip hop music. I officially retired in 2000 and unretired in 2010. Thanks Jay Z.
