Topic: Version 5.1 and Virtual Memory (Tip) {Audio Only}

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Because I have 2GB of physical RAM on my setup, I decided to disable Windows XP virtual memory completely and put VDJ v5.1 through its paces. When I began testing, however, I noticed a considerable speed problem while loading tracks, especially during automix. So much so, that the first track was still loading as it played, and the played portion was getting dangerously close to the portion not yet loaded. Also, there were a couple of instances where the track being mixed in with smart mode was not quite ready for primetime (silence ensued - as much as 15+ sec.).

This problem is completely and consistently repeatable in tests run on a performance-tweaked Toshiba Tecra A4-S211 notebook, WinXP Pro SR2, 1.6GHz CPU, 2GB RAM, 64MB ATI Radeon Mobile video (not running music videos), with music storage on a firewire external Acomdata HD (160GB / 7200RPM) and, IMHO, is linked to the VM setting.

Therefore, my advice to those reading this post, no matter how much physical memory your system contains, is to have at least a small VM pagefile (even a GB will do the trick, I currently use a fixed, 2GB file) for smooth, trouble-free loading, particularly if you use automix at all.
