Could someone tell me what do I actually need to have a go at creating skins.

open a skin .zip and study the XML. You will see code that tells VDJ what to do, once you see what commands do what you then can start to play. Basically most(depending on the task) command lines have an action and an X# & Y# that tell vdj where on the skin the action should happen, and then another set of X/Y #'s telling vdj what graphics to display at that specified location on the skin. That was about as basic as i can explain it, sorry. :)
