Before upgrading the vdj I got in to the habit of backing up my database and make a copy of it, so I would go to c:\program files\virtual dj\ database.xml, select it and copy it to desktop. I’m depending on this because most of my music doesn’t have proper id3 tags, and I’m annoyed to do it manually, but all my files are named as “artist - title.mp3”
(btw does anyone know of a software which can analyze your mp3 library and write correct id3 tags with artist title using the filename and will be sweeet if does accurate bpm analysis too and mark it in the tag)
I do the same with my “playlists” folder.
Now the update went smoothly, but vdj 5 wasn’t rebuilding my database with the time and bpm.
I start digging in this forum and found out few things about what the recurse feature does, so I did try to recurse first but didn’t work out .
What is new in the version 5 is the fact that vdj has its own “Virtual Dj”folder inside of the folder “My Documents” in addition to the one in “Program Files” and this new vdj folder stores your user database as “VirtualDJ Database v5.xml” plus stores your play lists, effects plug inns etc.
Now the work around:
After update open vdj, click “config” click on the “browser” tab and if you do not have good id3 tags disable the read Id3 tags and for the “search database” choose “manually”, DO NOT CLIK ‘CHECK”, “CLEAN” OR “FIX”, just close the config panel and click the second button on the right of the search line and check “filename” “artist” and “title” , now close the vdj program.
Now is a good time to make sure that you have the latest copy of “VirtualDJ Database.xml” from your previous version of vdj on your desktop, if you fin d it right click on it and choose copy.
Go to C:\Program Files\Virtual DJ\ and erase the “VirtualDJ Database.xml” and any variation of it like “VirtualDJ Database (user).xml”, now right click anywere on the background of the folder window (without selecting any file ) and choose paste.
Go to “My documents” double click on the “Virtual DJ” folder icon and select the file named “VirtualDJ Database V5.xml” and erased it, also delete any variation of the “VirtualDJ Database.xml” that you find in this folder, now paste again the old “VirtualDJ Database.xml” file from your desktop.
Close all the opened windows and start vdj
Go in your browser section click “My Computer” and right click on the “Local Disc” (that stores your music, the same one that was in your previous version of vdj) then select “Add to search DB”
DO NOT CLICK RECURSE EVER UNLESS YOU WANT TO RESCAN, TO REBUILD FROM SCRATCH YOUR DATABASE
WHEN YOU ADD NEW SONGS YOU WILL HAVE TO MANUALY ADD TO SEARCH DB AND MANUALY SCAN THEM FOR BPM
GET IN TO THE HABIT OF MAKING A COPY OF YOUR DATABASE FILES AFTER ADDING MUSIC
Now if you saved your playlist folder(first close vdj program) open it and select al the playlists that you want and go to “my documents”, open “virtual dj’ folder, open “playlists” folder and paste all the selected playlists
IMPORTANT! IF YOU START A SECOND SESION OF VDJ WHILE VDJ IS STARTING OR RUNNING ALL THIS MIGHT REVERT TO A RECURSE VERSION OF VDJ, SO BE STADY WHEN YOU CLICK THAT VDJ ICON OR YOU’D HAVE TO DO ALL THIS AGAIN
HAPPY SPINNING!
