The time has come to return my borrowed machine and get one for myself. I've currently been running a dedicated Dell with a Celuron processor and 528MB of RAM which is pretty weak, but it was a free computer (for awhile) and I had no problems running just the audio of VDJ.

Now, I'm not gonna be mixing video anytime soon, but I would like to keep the option open in the future, so this brings me back to the subject at hand....

How big is the diffrence in performance for VDJ while using either processor???

I plan on getting the same base machine regardless of processor, but can save a few $$$ with the AMD:
Dell E1505
Windows Vista™ Home Premium
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHZ, 2 DIMM
256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory
Speed: 80GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)

So what do y'all like best? AMD or Intel or will the diffrence not really affect VDJ?

Do you want to save a few dollars, or get better performance? As far as I know, Intel still makes faster chips. Also, the video card you selected, is sharing some memory. Check the site for HyperMemory, and it will tell you only 128 is dedicated. My advice, get the machine you want, not what you can afford. Save up, or charge it if you have to.

Regardless of processor, DO NOT GET A DELL LAPTOP :D

There have been countless users with dells and unsolvable problems here on the forums, meaning no solutions for a variety of VDJ problems. This is due to a dell manufacturing process, exclusive to them.

Firstly, dont get a dell.
Second, choose any daul core processor,
thirdly, importantly, do NOT get a processor with shared memory (anything that says hypermemory or turbocache)
Get a video card with DEDICATED memory.

Processor brand is highly irrelevant here, but if it came down to the crunch, i would chose core 2

There have also been Dell users that have done well here. I have seen laptop users from all manufacturers, that have had issues. I missed the Dell promotion on a XPS laptop last week, and it is now $3,300.00 just for some of the good stuff. I will have 21 days to get it to work with VDJ. If it don't work, I will send it back. I will do that for any laptop I buy. I can't believe I am even buying a laptop, but my ex wife just got 17" Inspiron, and wants to buy me one. It will keep me from setting up my machine every night and tearing it down every morning. I figure if I'm going to get one, I might as well go for the top of the line. It will also allow me to demo my video stuff when I visit a client.

Yeah, lets just say Dell will either work flawless or crap with VDJ. Its like a very expensive lucky packet :D

All the best for yours!

I haven't ordered yet, still trying to work out a deal, because we want to buy my daughter one also. If not, I will wait till they go on sale again. The reason I have resisted laptops, is because of all the issues I have seen from all manufactures. I have decided it has to be the way it is set up. I have seen people get help with every brand. I will set aside the time to get it done, during the return time period. If I can't get it to work in that time, I will send it back. I advise every one to do the same.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I've got a guy here at work (computer genius/dork?) that I'm running a lot of this by and trying to make up some final decisions.

I'm gonna check into a video card without the shared memory and probably go with the Intel processor. As far as the dell stuff goes, I'm probably gonna stick with them for now and follow A Man and His Musics advice about checking everything out within the return period.

I'll keep you posted...

And thanks again for the advice!

From my experiences with having to buy dell over the last couple of years (due to government/education deals done out of my control) I can say that the dell machines that dont have 3d cards have pausing and blank screen problems at random times using VDJ but the ones that do have dedicated graphics seem to work fine.

Keep in mind the x1400 graphics is actually 128 dedicated and 128 shared memory but if you set aside a partition to have nothing except for a finely tuned OS and VDJ running it does video just fine. I dont have a tcv system though so if your into scratching I'm not sure what the performance will be.

The 2gb ram is a good call but you should try to pick a processor that is dual core you definately will notice a difference in applications that use it.

A Man and His Music, what about small form factor?

I am still a Small Form Factor guy. I have made no secret about that. I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer, when it comes to computers. But, what I have learned in life is if you go small, you usually sacrifice something. My first concern has always been how I can do my best, not how light I can travel. Everything I have learned has come from forums, and magazines. When I first started, I saw laptop users had the most issues, so I decided to go the other way. If a guy wants to go laptop, I am not the one to tell him not to. I don't even own a laptop, so am not the one to go to for advice. I just try to point him in the direction that others have taken. Like getting the fastest processor, a 7200rpm hard drive, a dedicated video card, at least 1g of ram (2g is better), and so on. If you start out closer to the top of the wall, you have a better chance of getting over it. However, I am still a SFF guy, and am waiting for my new case to come in (about 5 weeks from now), to build.

Now, as for me getting a laptop. My ex wife has offered to buy me one, after I saw hers. She has an Inspiron 1705, but of course that would not do for me. The XPS has all the bells and whistles, and has been rated very high in the gaming community. So I decided to give it a try for several reasons. I set up my machine twice a day, and the plugging in and out takes a toll on the ports. Twice, I have had to take my machine to a clients house, to demo the video portion of my services. They did not mind, but I think I can do a smoother job with a laptop. That's if it will work. If it does everything great, that will be an added bonus, but I will still hook up both SFF's for a gig.

So, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I own my PC shop and I must say Intel all the way! There is no AMD CPU that can compare even close with Core 2.

I know nothing about the conversation so i'm asking based on the info given to me at various shops... Does AMD respond better with good videos or vice versa?

Intel, be sure you won't mistake ;)

Well, here's what I finally got...

Dell Inspiron E1505, Intel Core 2 Duo processor T7200 (4MB/2.00GHz/667MHz)
15.4 Inch TrueLife Wide-Screen
2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm for Inspiron 6400/E1505
ATI MOBILITY RADEON X1400 HyperMemory
80GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic Edition, English

I know that the video card isn't ideal due to the shared mem, but I don't currently do video, nor do I see it in the next year or so, so I stuck with the ATI card. Plus, it was the only video card offered and the deal was too good to pass up.

I googled "dell notebook coupons" and found a $500 off coupon for this PC, putting everything just at $1K, which I think is a pretty damn good deal considering the hardware.

So what do you guys think? Should be a definate step up from my Dell w/ a Celluron and 512MB of RAM.

One question... Stick witht the Vista, or install my copy of XP Corporate???

I always had a glitch when using the sampler an on some of the effects... thinkin' that may just be a thing of the past now ;^)

And thanks for the earlier advice gents...

Your weak spot is:
ATI MOBILITY RADEON X1400 HyperMemory
as it is taking the main ram, not having it's own might be slow for video use, but as Cyder said, video works much better on Vista, so I think it will work. In XP there will be problems for sure.

Well, like I said, they didn't really give me a choice on video cards, but all the other harrdware looked pretty solid for the price, so I just went for it.

But I was hoping to optimize the OS anyway, like grug said. Isn't there a way to NOT share memory with the video card? Can't I just block the card from using extra memory? Will I still be able to run video on Vista or XP? (not too big a deal for me since I'm not spinning video anyway, but would like to know if the capability is there)

I'm sure I'll have hours of configuration time on my hands once I get this thing next week...

With some tweaking on Vista it should be fine. You will see when you get it as every system is unique.
