Topic: Remote control using 2 PC's over wireless network

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I have my regular gig rig with built in sound, RAID drives, touch screens, the works. But lately I bought a tablet laptop and I thought it would be cool to use it as a remote, via wireless network, as a second instance controlling the main rig wired to the sound system. In the config screens I have noticed the "network synchronization" feature. My question is, how do you set up the master and the slave, and do you need to tell windows to use static IP's for both units for reliability? In the space where you enter the IP, which computers' IP do you enter? What port number do you use on each machine?

OK....no Yes it seems simple enough BUT, I need this to work over a REAL network, not a direct cable. I know how to set up networks and I can't get this to work to save my life! Isn't there anything printed or online that explains all of the options and what they do and why? Do you need to set the port, and what are the recommended ports to use? I have set hard addresses on like 5 different computers of varying configurations. Still no go. I have restarted the machines after any changes. The firewall (windows) has allowed connections. I am using the latest VDJ. The computers can see one another (files and such) through windows explorer.
Even if I leave windows to automatically acquire IP's this should work as long as the iIP's don't change after a reboot.

Alright, mabey I am not getting what the synchronization does. I am thinking that, 1) you have a computer set up with a sound system and VDJ running, just like normal, and it just happens to be hooked up to a network hub. 2) you have another machine that is also hooked up to the same hub. Now you start VDJ and viola, it mimics the other PC's VDJ. If you change something on either machine is plays through the sound system. Is this correct? Or am I whacked?

I might be misunderstanding what you're trying to do.

Are you trying to use the tablet PC as a remote control for the PC hooked up to the sound system?

I think he is trying to do what Gotomypc does where he can control one computer with another and see the dj computer on his tablet.

Yes, that's what I'm trying to do. Now I did try Windows remote desktop, and it does work ok but it's not smooth enough to move form one PC to the other. While logged on to one computer, the other one goes to the login screen, and windows forces you to use a password to get back in. Also, the tablet logon makes you jump through too many hoops to get control again. The wireless is transmitting A LOT of data back and forth, I"ll have to test it a bit to see if it is show worthy. What I want is a a remote program that will leave BOTH screens open and available to use. This way, there is no lapse between using either system. I play shows where I get into the crowd, play name that tune, etc. and to have a system that can run from anywhere in the room would be awesome.

Interesting, I might have a play with that myself. As any regular readers of the forums may be aware, I recently test drove the Hercules wireless toy this week, in the hope that it would provide a similar wireless solution - it doesn't, unless you count being no more than 3/4 metres away from your main PC as being remote control!

Do these "remote desktop" programs require an internet connection, or can you just run it as two wireless machines talking directly to each via wireless? If so, this could be the way to go.... wireless palm PC, wireless headphones, radio mic etc...

Reckon it's possible to view VDJ on a palm PC? Maybe a simplified, smaller custom skin is in order? Any thoughts would be appreciated - I've given up on the hercules gadget, but I'm still keen to find a good remote control solution - I'd happily spend a couple of hundred £s on a palmtop if it could be made to do the job... ;-)

real vnc uses lan to connect.

wirelessly

Sky, you're a genius man! Just tried it here at home between my lappy and one of my old tower machines, and it works a treat! If you set it up right (low colour resolution etc) VDJ still seems to be reasonably responsive, certainly seems fast enough for the remote control idea I've been harping on about for the last fortnight... ;-) And better still, it seems to work completely transparently on the host machine, you can take over and use it normally without all that windows logon malarky...

Right, I'm gonna go grab my wireless headphones and head down to the club... give it a proper tryout! Fingers crossed the wifi will give me enough range....

Thanks again Sky, top tip!

oneday i will buy a tablet pc and use that to control :) ,

leave all the crazy wifi dj consoles at home :)

You might want to try a product called Dameware. My regular day job is System Administration and this is the software of choice. It places a low load on the CPU and does not open a second instance on the machine like Remote desktop does. I manage over 30 servers and remote into all types of desktops and laptops without any issues and in full color.
