Hey guys...:o)

I'm doing quite a major gig on thursday night at a big hotel in a city near where i live. It's only a two hour stint after two bands, but I'll be catering for 600+ people. The night has a 70's theme so I reckon in two hours I'll play between 50 and 70 songs.

Trouble is, I'm not from that era and my 70's music knowledge isn't really up to scratch. Can anyone give me some ideas of really good 70's music that I can use?

Help is appreciated.

Cheers...and keep spinnin'...(",)

Hi all,

I'f you're looktng at 70's music with a more contemporary 'sounds' I would advice to
digg up some Funk, Soul (check for instance jazzman records) and psychadelic stuff.

If you want to get a rough POP sound try these:
Wild Cherry - Play That Funky Music
Golden Earring - Radar Love
Barry White - You're The 1st, the last the everything
Ram Jam - Black Betty
The Romantics - What I Like About You
Free - All Right Now
Claude Francois - Alexandrie Alexendra (dirty french disco-pop)
The Jacksons - BLame It on the boogie (pre-party)
Michael Jackson - Don't Stop Till You Get Enough
Bohannon - Foot Stompin Music
Michael Zager Band - Let's All Chant
Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive
The Gap Band II - Oops Upside your head
Tom Jomes - She's a Lady 'though not sure if 70's
Steppenwolf - Born To Be Wild (might be 60's)
Meat Loaf - Paradise By the Dashboard Lite
The Village People - YMCA
The Knack - My Sharona
Kiss - I Was Made For Lovin
Boney M - Daddy Cool (only use intro of song, mash-up with something fresh)
Amanda Lear - Follow Me
Foxy - Get Off

I know it's quiet cheezy, but at the and of the day, believe me, the cheezier, the more people on the dancefloor, especially late at night. Yes booze DOES make most of people tasteless *grin*

Good luck

all though these are nice songs... the topic is 70's songs, you have listed 80s - mid to late 80s

Hi Fatkatzdj,

Thanks for bringing up the remark.
I was afraid to bring up the topic as to be blamed to be an asshole.
But you're totally right, those are 80's not 70's songs.

OK... there is a lot of post asking how to be a good dj... GET YOUR PENCILS OUT.

"KNOW YOUR MUSIC" Some djs beatmatch and others can go beyond that with scratching but they all know thier music inside and out. If your playing a set by genre, how do know what song to play next to keep your crowd moving... Remember changing a song out of context can change your flow of the floor and now your doing a whole different sound.

Suppose someone requested a particular style of music... how do you know what song to play for that request. Also, most DJ's try to think of songs 2-3 songs out.

common request:

Play something oldschool
can you play something from the 80s
I need some funk
Do you have any old school R&B
can you play some early house or breakbeats or clubstyle
Then theres the classic rock

And my all time fav " can you play something we can dance to? "
