Topic: Anybody got any news on a new Gen of MACBOOK PROs coming out? - Page: 1

This part of topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information

I'm like a week away from getting a MACBOOK PRO. Currently I use the Powerbook G4 (1.5 ghz - 1.25 gig ram). When the MAC version of VDJ drops im going to need to get a lappy with super speed and a excellent video card. As I want to DJ stricly all video sets. I go my eyes focused on the MACBOOK PRO 17' (2.33 ghz - 2 gig ram - upgrade to 200 gig hardrive) as of now.

Does anyone got any info on any next generation of MACBOOK PRO's coming out? I did a little research and heard rumors about a super slim 12' and a new screen tech coming out soon. I think ::anewsome:: mentioned something on a previous post about a next gen coming soon.

I just don't want to get burned buying one now and a new one coming out in a month. I know computers are constantly evolving, but I bought my POWERBOOK and 2 or so months later they dropped the MACBOOK PRO!

"No one knows what Apple is going to do until Apple does it".

Sorry C5, but there is no official word on anything out of Apple until SJ or another Apple exec announces it or there is a press release. But blind guessing is always fun anyway. =P

The only time that Apple broke rank in recent history and "previewed" a product that wasn't due for months was when SJ demoed the now released and very hot selling "AppleTV" http://www.apple.com/appletv/.

It's pretty obvious now though that Apple and Steve Jobs did that to condition the public into expecting possible previews (when needed) realizing that they were going to have to do the same this past month withe introduction of the iPhone.

All that said though, it's because of Apple being a leader in innovtion and the secrecy that it shrouds itself in order to keep non-innovative companies like microsoft (they just copy others and do what they're now well known for worldwide; befriend a company, buy them out, take their innovation claiming that it was their own, and then put that company out of business) from gaining any knowledge and/or ground on Apple's innovations.

That practice is SO publicly known, that Apple famously mocked microsoft's lack of innovation in regards to it's "Longhorn" (now released as vista aka windows xp sp3) with these banners at their annual professional users WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference): http://www.macminute.com/2004/06/27/tigerbanners/

REGARDING YOUR ORIGINAL QUESTION:

As far as unsabstantiated rumors, yes there are a LOT of Apple rumor news and/or rumor sites because of Apple's secrecy, and yes I have seen them. The MacBook "thin' has been rumored for well over a year now by the same site that has been talking about a "gamers dream" Mac. One of the things that might make this long standing rumor a reality is the use of NAND flash based memory and storage instead of thicker and heavier disk based hard drives.

The new screen technology that you are referring to is backlit screen technology which may be used by Apple, and will provide some major advantages like longer battery life and more vivrant colors among other things.

I personally hope for a 13" widescreen MacBook Pro to replace the now extinct 12" PowerBook that I had purposely downsied to from my 15" PowerBook because lots of club dj booths are space constrained.

But again, "No one knows what Apple is going to do until Apple does it".

:: ConQuest :: Yeah I know what your saying. If they released a statement saying "Feb 21st we are launching an LCD screen MACBOOK PRO," no one would buy the ones that are sitting there now.

Im just fishing for any rumors.

Well saying all of this, Is the g4 sufficient for video? I have one also. I don't want to upgrade too soon either. ConQuest, should we wait or buy now? I don't need it asap, but maybe by the summer, I just want to get my monies worth out of my g4. I really don't use it right now.
What's Good?

I'm skeptical that G4 laptops will be able to mix video. At least on my 12 inch G4, I know the graphics card just isn't strong enough.

No problem, I will be investing over the next month. How do feel about, official Mac refurbs? I need to save a little cash for video collections.

:: AllStyle :: As I understand, the grapihics card in the G4's aren't enough. I'm selling mine to a friend in like a week to make room for the MACBOOK PRO. The Apple Store always has refurbished models. I checked them out the other day and may get one myself. Check out this link www.store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore and type refurbished in the search bar. Last I checked they only had the last gen models avalible but I have seen they 2.33 ghz models on it before.

Oh yeah...The Apple Store gives discounts for students. If you got a student ID or know someone who does you'll get like $200 off. I still got my college ID and live in Lincoln Park, so if you don't have a student ID and need one, I got no problem hooking a fellow DJ up.

C5, Thanks fro the i.d. hook up. I have college i.d. also. I was primarily wondering about bugs or problems. I see refurbs all the time, just was wondering if anyone had issues w/refurbs.

Based on Apple's traditonal cycling period, the MacBook Pro line should see an update fairly soon, with possibly another minor processor speed bump and other minor spec bumps as well, by early-mid summer (June or July) at or around Apple's annual professional expo, Apple WWDC (Worlwide Developers Conference).

As anewsome said, using any non-Intel based Mac ("Power" line) is going to be painful for the video features of VDJ / VV. It's not just the video card though, you must remember that other important factors play a role as well. For example, the G4's Frontside Bus is only 167Mhz vs. the Core Duo's 667Mhz, so the Core processors open up a major bottleneck for processing power by almost 5x. Also, look at the type of ram that is used in the Intel Macs, currently DDR2 (Double Data Rate) PC2-5300 running at 667Mhz as well, vs. the G4's ram running at 333Mhz, or if you happen to have the one G4 model that does use DDR2, 533Mhz, but that G4's frontside bus is still bottlenecked at nearly 1/5th of an Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro.

My advice? Based on you not purchasing until this summer, wait until shortly after the MacBook Pros are updated around WWDC and if you want to save some cash (even more than the student discount), do as C5 said and pick up one of the now discontinued (but still very good) from the Apple Online refurb store http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=245F1283&nclm=CertifiedMac , although you can also call around your area to any Apple re-seller like Best Buy or Circuit City (they're bot rolling out Apple Shops in their stores due to the huge demand for Macs) or CompUSA (if they're still in business by that time) because they'll all be looking to liquidte they're outdated stock. Forget the Apple Store, they send everything back to Apple's main warehouse as soon as an updated product is introduced. The only things you'll find there are open-box items and they usually won't be as good a buy as what you'll get on the online store.

All Apple online refurb items are fully warrantied and no one can tell the difference between a new or refurb model.

Thanks ConQuest :) Great info, I will probably go refurbeb primarily because I will have my tax return soon & I want to be very comfortable with the video side of VDJ & build a good video collection by this summer. I too, want to become a VT.

I would say that the likelihood of a new commercial is high. What it's contents will be, obviously, remains to be seen. Afterall, "no one knows what Apple is going to do until Apple does it". ;)

For those who don't know hat we're referring to in regards to Apple and it's history of using the SuperBowl as an event to advertise, one of the most popular and influential commercials of ALL TIME was aired only once by Apple during the SuperBowl back in 1984:

Video:

History and Impact:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_(television_commercial)

Pepsi Cola teamed up with Apple in 2004 and used the SuperBowl as a launch place as well for an iTunes music giveaway:

I personally would LOVE to see an ad that features Leopard and would further bury vista farther than microsoft's propoganda and incompetence has already buried it:

"Vista dawns, world yawns"
http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2456

The SuperBowl is this afternoon and Apple has stated very clearly that 2007 will be the start of a new beginning for the company having posted this teaser on January 1st:

"The first 30 years were just the beginning.
Welcome to 2007."

http://www.macrumors.com/2007/01/01/apple-com-the-first-30-years-were-just-the-beginning-welcome-to-2007/

Apple soon after introduced AppleTV and of course, the iPhone, at MacWorld. Both products marking Apple's entry into new markets, exactly as it had done 5 years earlier with the iPod's entry into the digital music player marketplace and 6 years earlier with iTunes' entry into the digital content management software marketplace, followed a little over 2 years later by the iTunes Store, formerly iTunes Music Store or iTMS. Note how the naming changes as Apple re-structures markets with each success.

Most believed that iPod (and iTunes) woud fail in that marketplace where there were so many more cheaper options, but most people evolved from settling for cheaper to wanting better. So most were wrong about the iPod and iTunes Store initially.

Most people use windows now. windows users have been switching to Macs by the hundreds of thousands year over year, totaling 1.3+ million switchers only within the past 2 years (NO Mac users are switching to windows, BTW - http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,55785,00.html ). Analysts (not Apple) predict that that number will be reached again just in 2007.

Almost a million and a half switchers in only half the time. See the bigger picture? Feel the people evolving? ;)

At MacWorld, Steve Jobs also announced that Apple Computer, Inc. would change it's name to Apple Inc., signifying Apple's further penetration into new markets beyond computers.

Again, note how the naming changes as Apple re-structures markets with each success.

Here's a great read regarding the difference between Apple and microsoft as companies and how their users generally regard them, albeit by a Mac enthusiast site (I just happened to stumble across this right now):

"Apple Has Fans & Microsoft Has Shills"
http://www.macnightowl.com/2007/01/17/apple-has-fans-microsoft-has-shills/

Damn, no Superbowl commercial... Oh well I've been checkin all the rumors sites daily. It looks like Leopard is coming soon.

Yeah, Apple's fickle like that. =P

They keep everybody guessing and SJ is known to change his mind and either release or not release (or announce) something at the last minute. Obviously, this would not be the case in regards to this commercial because that would be a lot of wated money on Apple's part if they decided to pull a commercial, but I was just pointing that fact out.

Leopard will be here soon enough to give all the dissapointed vista customers a look at what a real innovative company can do. ;)

lol vista is cool , for example i can now not even look at my pc to control it i can shout commands at it like MOUSE move to sector five , find humourous video below ;)
