I have a Maxtor 250gb hard drive that won’t finish formatting. I took the hard drive from a 500gb LACIE external hard drive case.. The case had two 250gb drive to make up the 500 gigs and one drive went bad.
I’ve Tried doing a complete format in a drive kit, in a computer as a slave and as a master by it self with windows install disc..
I get a message (windows was unable to complete the format).. No error message.

how to hardcore format a drive
if you have
a floppy drive
http://www.dehning.com/download/utilities/bootdisks/boot98.exe
download this and create a 98 bootdisk
reboot
once the computer has started it will as you wheter to boot into dos
agree ,
it will now ask you what to do
choose
start windows 98 with cd rom support
in a moment you will see
A:/
type Fdisk
then you will see
a few options choose
delete a logical non dos partion
look for your external drive and delete all the partions
then restart follow all above steps up to fdisk
but this time create a dos partion
on the external drive
, now restart
now when the computer boots up choose 98 support
and when you see A:/ type vol info
it will tell you the what drives there are
once you know the label such as F:
type A/:F:
now it will say F:
Type format:F
now remove the disk
and boot your drive now should work :)
