on my main system, I have two shuttle PC's in the rack and a KVM switch...
On my backup, I have an HP amd athlon 64 3400+ laptop, Dac 3, Begringer line mixer, Maudio fast track, behringer composer pro compressor, peavy kosmos, external 500 gb. drive, and two PGX-58 sure wireless mics...
you never know what could go wrong, so I roll with two complete systems, and minimum three computers...

Steve:
The kvm switch you have, does it allow you to hook up
both systems and then you are able to switch from one to the other.
Where can you get this?

i have my dns5000's hooked up to digital outs AND audio outs ... i aslo have audio tracks on tccd which i can play while running vdj via the alpha track on my players...so if the vdj goes out on audio outs i play alpha track audio tacks then switch over to the digital outs(via a push of a button)and play regular tracks... also i carry two mp3 cd's with me always.

Not sure how he is handling his USB devices but you would still have to unplug and re-plug into the backup system. The big thing about the KVM is that you only need one mouse, keyboard and monitor for 2 systems - which means you can maintain a nice gig box and no one would know you have two systems.

my shuttles have internal drives with my music and karaoke, so I'd just need to to unplug my video external drive and switch it to the second machine If one dumped... but as for music, I can switch back and forth all night....

I bring my laptop with Hercules controller and external HD caddy. If the main rig ever goes tits up, I can plug the hard drive into the caddy and play off my laptop instead. If it's the hard drive itself that fails, the laptop has 5GB of emergency tracks on it that would get me through the night. If it gets REALLY desperate, I also carry 3 caselogic wallets full of CDs. Over the top? Maybe. You can't put a price on peace of mind though....

I use a creative ZEN:W 30 gig model as one of my back up solutions.
I also have a portable DVD player with a couple of 3 video pre-mixed sets for any of my video shows.
I use a custom built small form factor PC that has back ghost images of the OS drive ready to be restored if that is an issue. Hardware/software is always tested before any gig and RARELY have a problem where I had to switch to a back up device.
One time I was setting up and a small power cable for a hard drive stopped the CPU fan from moving so my PC booted up and then after a few minutes just powered down automatically due to a built in heat alarm. I didn't know what the problem was until I took the cover off. That was about the most major problem ever. Other than the rare software glitch I have had no issues. And I am still having to use version 3.4 for now. I want to make the full switch but I don't have the time to do the full test for solid performance yet.
When originally had a mobile rig with a denon dual CD player and KVM switch and had 2 pc's with me and a huge book of back up CD's. Since my experience this past year with VDJ. I have got a smaller rig with NO CD player and just a portable media player (creative zen) with no worries. 99% rock solid!!!
