I've been hobby dj for 10 years now, only privately and house parties to birthdays and some clubs too...

I tend to do an all night 8 hour sets at house parties, my record was a 11 :) , I do this not even once a month and on demand.

My point is, during that time bit by bit you keep pounding music on ONLY one ear and after long term use i've found that my DJ 'ear' (my left) is somewhat doing a bit deaf ... I can now hear a slight difference between the two, yup so from now on I'll be trying to use my right ear!!! or might try some of the those ear plugs, what more can I say, take care of them coz you cant do an UNDO !!!

Welcome to the "dj"club. I have been Dj'ing since 1980 starting in radio and clubs in 1982 and my "cue ear" is my left, which is also my cell phone ear. I don't know which caused more damage but I have lost almost 75% of the hearing in that ear while my right ear is virtually perfect. Strange thing is I have not lost frequency response, only volume. Personally I think it is more due to the cell phone because I have always been very careful to keep the headphone volume down and it was only after I started usin the cell phone on a significant regualr basis about 7 or 8 years ago I notice the difference.

Good advice there! After about 3 or 4 hours of mixing in a club, my ears start to feel the wear and tear! Hopefully i'm not deaf yet though :)

Anybody know any brands of earplugs that have good audio response? (And that don't look completely stupid!)

Why not try some noise cancelling headphones? or some military ear plugs.

There is an ear plug that you can buy in pairs or by the box. They are yellow and you can pick them up at any safety supply store. I do not know if this is the type you need, but they are used around high noise areas and still allow you to hear voice. Hope this helps.

Keep the beat sweet.

Yellow foamies work great for volume reduction but have horrible frequency response. I recommend any kind of triple flange ear plugs(triple flange plugs have three ridges around the plug stem). These offer a reduction in overall volume but not frequency response. These are the types of plugs that the Navy issues when a volume reduction is needed but differences in frequency are important for verbal commands or to hear equipment changes(i.e. Gun crews, engineering spaces etc...)

Proper fit and correct use of the plugs is very important. So visit a specialist who can do a simple test and tell you the proper size to wear and the correct way to insert the plug. Once you know your size these can be purchased for under 10 a pair at any type of industrial safety store.
