Topic: How to avoid stretching still pictures in video output?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

When doing a picture slideshow in your video output, if the picture is stretched to fill the screen. This is fine if the aspect ratio of the picture matches that of your screen (generally 4:3 or 16:9) but when it doesn't match, then the picture is distorted to fill the screen.

Is there an option to keep the stretching from occurring or preferably to force the stretch to occur only upto the point where one of the dimensions match the creen; I guess this could be called padding the picture to fit the screen. kinda like when you play a widescreen movie on a regular TV and it places the 'black bars' at the top and bottom.

I have a wedding this Saturday and the couple gave me pictures for a slideshow on CD, but many of the pictures are either just a weird ratio, or are 'portrait' (as opposed to landscape) and therefore stretch to a point where it would not be pleasant to view, especially during dinner ;)
I got around the problem for now by batch cropping using JPEGCROPS ( http://ekot.dk/programmer/JPEGCrops/ ) but that doesn't do padding so I ended up having to lose some of the original pictures.
