Just to add to locodog's response
Toneplay is a mixing technique that just requires different musical notes from a song to try to match another's melody - there are many youtube videos online describing how to do it.
The original way of doing it just used smartly placed cues on different notes, but now there are padmodes dedicated to shifting specific cues by semitones ("piano play modes) - in VirtualDJ it's called keycue. It might be good to focus on learning what the technique is and what you can achieve with what already exists before trying to create something new (which you may not need to do).

I have a working VDJ Mapping for tone/piano play. You pretty much can play any cue like a song. Only single note melodies but not chords. Note I'm using a full size Qwerty Keyboard. If you meet any song that has chords try use its base note to play the melody. A keyboard that has the Function Keys (F1 - F12) seperated in fours helps a big deal in muscle memory.
You get two octaves of the keyboard. I'm using
F1 as the first key of the keyboard (C note) - cue_stop & key 0
F2 as cue_stop & key +1 momentarily
F3 as cue_stop & key +2 momentarily
............ fill in the blanks for F4 to F11 by adding a number higher
F12 cue_stop & key +11 momentarily
Scroll Lock, cue_stop & key +12 momentarily
going an Octave down I'm using the number keys right below the Function keys
1 on Keyboard, cue_stop & key 0 momentarily (this is a duplicate code same as F1 that plays the song in its original key)
2, cue_stop & key -1 momentarily
3, cue_stop & key -2 momentarily
........... fill in the blanks for 4-8 by adding a number higher
9, cue_stop & key -8 momentarily
0, cue_stop & key -9 momentarily
-(minus key), cue_stop & key -10 momentarily
+(plus key), cue_stop & key -11 momentarily
Backspace Key, cue_stop & key -12 momentarily
A few tips, use a good keyboard that you don't have to press so hard to respond for faster response. You can't play all melodies as some are just too fast and if you keep up carpal tunnel will stop you. I'm fast at typing but some fast melodies hurt my hand real bad for like 3 days and I had to decide not to mess with those.
I cant play music that I heard by ear on a keyboard so when transcribing songs I hear I have to use a DAW (FL Studio or Cubase in my case) and a free VST plugin called Neural Note to discern notes. Neural Note can transcribe both melodies from synths, basslines and those sang by humans.
If lucky I get MIDI files online that I can drop into my DAW to check how the notes arrange, then I transcribe to my system. If the melody I'm transcribing has a lot of elements playing at once I use stems in Virtual DJ to split just the melody or instrument that I want, record them and drag to Neural Note. Messing with notes also you may discover some melodies by chance.
As I usually use the two rows used for Tone Play (Piano Play) for other duties I've used the below mapping to toggle quick between Tone Play mapping and my normal Main mapping.
controller_mapping 'Keyboard' 'Main' ? controller_mapping 'Keyboard' 'Tone Play' : controller_mapping 'Keyboard' 'Main' : controller_mapping 'Keyboard' 'Tone Play'
Cant find a way to attach images so I may make a video soon
