i really enjoy just having a mini jam session, headphones in... the rest of the world out.
im still unfamiliar with a lot of keyboard shortcuts but i suppose i dont need to know them all for just playing around.

All the time, I've a controller, and auxiliaries but having a mix in bed, when I'm working away from home in a b&b or maybe at a low key sesh (where the logistics of rocking up with hw doesn't seem worth it)
And my grasshoppers/disciples I always start them on keyboard only (they get the basics in their own time) then once they have an idea I'll teach them my hw.
In all honesty being limited to keyboard only gives a user the motivation to learn remapping and once you can map a keyboard you can remapped anything, even given the most highend hw a default mapping still wouldn't let me perform my best.

there's a whole facebook group for us believe it or not

think of it this way - a keyboard IS a controller when you get down to it.

all the time! Only ever used VDJ this way. Can't afford a licence so limited to mouse and keyboard. Mouse mixing has it's benefits and having V8 by Fruit makes it easier because of all the Custom Buttons and pads available - LOVE that skin! What I'm looking for is a good keyboard mapping, if such a thing exists or a list of keystroke functions for printing.

mapping is pretty easy to do yourself with a little patience, there is a list of keyboard functions at the link below that you can copy and print out. I used to really enjoy mouse mixing, i was working on getting the mouse wheel mapped as a scratch button once but i couldnt quite figure it out. i might try that again actually now that there is new mapping methods and scripting. i thiink it willl be a fun project.

I dont mix using just the laptop but I do run VDJ weekly after downloading tracks so that I can analyze them and set my cue markers and beat grids.

now theres a sight i miss, my daughters grown up now but i still remember when she would stand by me with a hercules mp3 and mix whatever she felt inspired to do so. or she would join me in the booth and stand on a stool to mix a few tracks.
isnt nostalgia a funny thing.

I changed the shortcuts to suit my own needs but remaining logical. The standard issue are prone to mistakes, OOOPS! which no matter how good you are will happen. Sticking ones hands in the air is the best reaction, with a nice whooop!!!!
I DJ with out a controller, analogue mixer, Novahub audio interface and short cut keys. My NS6 is due on ebay, the same path of my CDJ's and turntables before.
