In a different thread I mentioned this topic ealier today.
Anyway my wife upgraded her phone to a Galaxy S7, so I stepped in and got her Galaxy S4.
Hm it's good as a VDJ remote control.
Anyway I installed Apple Bonjour to enable communicatioon between my laptop and phone.
It was working..but the laptop fan was running flat out all the time, and VDJ indicated high cpu usage.
I started task manager and found the cpu usage was running at 50%, and memory usage was 2gb even though I was not playing a song.
That's not good!

I uninstalled Firefox, Bonjour, and my NI sound card driver.
I disabled Microsoft updates.
I uninstalled the Win10 update whose icon can be seen on the task bar.
I tried to run the VDJ remote without Bonjour and failed.
When I finally installed Bonjour again I unticked the two options, one of which is for upgrading Apple software.
Using the Microsoft firewall I prevented Bonjour gaining acess to the internet.

The result was cpu usage dropped to around the 10-30% region, and memory usage dropped to around 1.3gb even when playing a video, or using milkdrop in hi resolution. Good!

Something hurt my laptop, and I do not believe it was not VDJ8 ??????

Did you check in task manager which process was using more cpu exactly?

Hi Adion.
I don't think it's vdj.
My first thought was that it might be 8.2 so I tried 8.1 but there was no improvement.
My English was less than good last night.

The 50% cpu usage was by a main windows service, I can't remember its name. Windows did not do any updates?

I was in bed before LOL.

VDJ now tops the task manager process cpu usage list peaking at 61% doing video mixing, it mostly runs @ 20-30%.
No problems today.

I couldn't remember which process was the problem.
It may not have been in the list today?!

Anyway it shows how watching things like cpu and memory usage is useful.
Task Manager is an excellent tool.

Adion I have two identical X58L laptops.
On starting my backup laptop it did some windows updates, and then I intended to synchronize my data.

Anyway approx. cpu usage offline with VDJ8.2 running but not playing : 50% svchost.exe (netsvcs), virtualdj8.exe 1%
There are other Win 7 processes running but at a low cpu usage.

When mixing video my laptop resoures are put under strain.

Total cpu is varying between 60-70%.
Thats no good.

I'll have a look at my main laptop again to confirm what seem to be big differences in cpu usage.
I'm not used to seeing so much of my laptops resources being used.

Note that when running a powerful modern laptop these cpu usage figures may not be noticable. I'm using two intel dual core 2.4ghz, 5gb ram, and 1000gb hdd.

svchost is used by a lot of windows services though, so it may be early to make any conclusions.
Is it only high on cpu use while vdj is running? Does it drop back when vdj is closed?

VDJ8.2 not running ...svchost.exe still using @50%, and memory still @2.0gb.

My laptop appeared to install a considerable number of updates (offline) on starting today yet no new updates have been listed ?
The big Win10 update is staring at me in the control panel!?

Anyway now I'll uninstall Firefox.
UPDATE: NO CHANGE AFTER FIREFOX REMOVED.

The service wuauserv is using @50% of the cpu.
It looks like the main suspect.

Why am I not suprised?

gbb0330 said:
the windows update service (wuauserv) runs inside svchost, usually with several other windows services.
you can run tasklist /svc to see a list of services and their PIDs and confirm that the svchost that contains wuauserv is in fact the one that's causing the CPU spike (look for the PID)

you can isolate wuauserv with the following commands
net stop wuauserv
sc config wuauserv type= own
net start wuauserv

this may fix your problem, you can also try the microsoft fix it:

I selected the "never update option" in the Win 7 update control panel, and also unticked the other two related options.
Basic cpu usage without running any programs is 0%, memory usage 1gb.

I'll now start VDJ8.2.
Little change!
Playing a video 10-20% cpu usage, and 1.19gb memory usage.

Hence the problem is the Win 7 operating system, and it's update method.

This does not suprise me in the least.

It seems a little unfair that I picked on Mozilla, Apple, and NI.

wouldn't have the v7 optimizer killed that service/

A long walk for an easy fix there ron.

True Locodog.
However I'm glad I found out about the scale of the update resource issue.
This allows me to be a little conspiratorial since I think Microsoft want to move people from 7 and 8 to 10.
Would they do this on purpose?

I have got the optimiser installed on my desktop, but hardly ever use it since it takes a little longer to setup.
If things work it's not needed.

I've only just started going back onto the internet due to using the iremote, that's why I've just hit this problem.

Svchost has been a regular source of jamming up Windows O/S since XP, you can put the tinfoil hat away.

I'm fond of my tinfoil hat, I think it's more often than not justified.

I don't hate them..however:
Firefox is struggling due to many factors, fair and otherwise.
I bought a copy of NI's Traktor Pro, it's massively bloated compared to VDJ, and the early NI sound card drivers may harm VDJ.
I don't live in the Apple world..so when it appears in my ecosystem I look at it with suspicion.

@Locodog

We may not need the optimiser.
Just turn off the windows updates, and do it manually when we have time.
