I want to alternate between my PC and Laptop by saving all my work as in new or changed: CUE points, Virtual Folders and whatever. I just used Cyder's VDJ8 - Backup and Restore program. And I think there will be problems if I import a backup file into the other machine.
I examined the XML file that gets created, and see there are Audio and Video specifics to my PC. I can't see it being a good situation if I import this file to my Laptop. I'm sure the drivers will really get confused.
Is there a way to successfully move from a PC to a Laptop, back to a PC, back to the Laptop, over and over so I can keep my hard work intact and current on both machines? It's pretty silly to have to duplicate the PC and Laptop manually. It's such a waste of time, and things get missed.
Do we have a good procedure to keep work flowing between machines with Version 8 without screwing things up?

I just use Robomirror to backup my gig machine on to a portable HDD then on to my backup machine. I have It set to process my VDJ folder and my music folder.
Because it only copies files that are new or changed it takes seconds to do and keeps everything in sync.

Thank you Kradcliff for the response. I take it backing up Version 8 is identical to Version 7.
I do like Cyder's "Backup / Restore" tool, but it's meant for backing up and restoring to the same machine since it names drivers and hardware.
So then right now it's a 4 step process, and I don't think it will transfer over filter and virtual folders correctly.
1: Copy the Documents & Settings Virtual DJ folder to the target machine. There is a slight complexity if machines are running different IOS like in my case where my PC is on XP and my Laptop is on Windows 7.
2: Copy all drive database XML files to the target machine. Keep the Drive letters the same on both devices.
3: Clone all music hard drives.
4: Launch VDJ and run the database clean up tool if needed.
I use FileSync to do the same job as RoboMirror.
All these steps are a pain it the butt. I wish I was smart enough to make a GUI that can do the job with a couple of clicks. And I've been waiting for years for someone else to build it.
Simple like this:
Hook up both devices to the same LAN and have file sharing turned on for all drives and folders necessary.
Launch GUI [ good name ]
Confirm connection with a visual indicator.
Press [ TRANSFER ]
Then get back to working on music after the process completes.
My quirk right now is I've been doing CUE points on my PC. And have been doing that also on my Laptop. Hmmmm... which way to go to lose the least amount of work.
It would be nice to do a merge so if I do work on both machines I have the option to merge all new work to both machines. Yeah that would be even more excellent. Takes the pressure off trying to maintain synchronization.
Like this for example.
Do your work on both machines. Change or add/delete CUE points, virtual and filter folders, effects, config settings, music, and whatever else. And then anytime at your convenience LAN the two machines together. Run the program that merges (clones) both machines with updates from both machines with just a couple of clicks. Now that would be Freakin' AWESOME !!!
Please move this request to the "Wish List" when this gets far down the list. I would love to see this utility program happen.

It is possible to sync the VDJ folder by Dropbox or similar therefore keeping all your cues etc. the same across multiple machines.
