That's because you are applying far too much gain to the song. Providing that you have not disabled auto gain, when the gain knob is at 12 o'clock, the gain level should be optimal for each song that's been analysed by VirtualDJ and the limiter should rarely trigger for most songs (Make sure that you allow a new song that you've never played before to load in full before playing it to allow the auto gain level to be determined.)

If you increase the gain beyond the optimal level, then more parts of the song will exceed 0dB and trigger the limiter, causing a 'pumping' sound as the limiter works harder to keep the sound level under 0dB. Unlike analogue, digital audio cannot exceed 0dB and without the limiter, you would have distorted sound instead, which will sound bad and could also damage your speakers in extreme cases.

If you are doing this because the sound is not loud enough then you need to turn up the volume on your amp/speaker or upgrade to a more powerful sound system. You should not attempt to use gain to compensate for a sound system that's inadequate. In software this is not possible because as above, digital sound output from a computer sound card cannot exceed 0dB.

With a hardware analogue mixer, it is possible to exceed 0dB - I.e: If you plug your computer's output into a hardware mixing board then you may be able to squeeze a bit more out of your system, but this is not recommended because you run the risk of damaging your speakers and/or causing your amps to overheat and cut out.
