When you are mixing for a DJ SET (it can be a house party, a pool party, a wedding etc) please see what songs you have chosen for the specific set.
As far as the technique my humble advice is to match the songs with the vibe at the event and select each song to get everyone going.
This is in part to music knowledge and secondly technique. If you can put a good mix in your head, meaning a series of songs to play than you can figure out how to property mix them together. Practice this before any gig
