Topic: What technique you use, kill the instruments and leave only the vocals during a mix ?.

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

As a long time DJ, started in the 80s, turntables with vinyl, then late 90s switch to Atomixmp3, to now VDJ. I play for a lot of reggae crowds and have used Atomixmp3 Eq Crossfader to kill the bass & highs on coming track and leaving the mid, while killing the mid on the playing track and leaving the highs and bass. With VDJ using scripts, I now use filters plugins to do this. I would like to hear from all the djs here, if you use this technique, and how you do this in your mix. Thanks

if you can't get a copy of the original instrumental and the normal version to invert the signal to cut out the instrumental in audition, you can sometimes get one copy and use the built in vocal filter or better yet something like pro q equalizer to remove the vocals as best as you can from one track then invert the track you modified and layer it with the normal track. but this method rarely gets decent results. The method can be written like a mathematic formula

(instrumental + vocal) + (-instrumental) = vocal

because you have inverted one of the instrumental tracks, when the two are layered perfectly over one another the instrumentals will cancel each other out leaving you with just the vocal.

If you need a tutorial check out www.acapellas4u.co.uk

Thanks for the info synthet1c, check it out later. I was hoping a vdj plugin could do a decent job of this.

there is a plugin but it only removes the vocal, and doesn't do the best job in the world.. Unfortunately there is no easy way to remove the instrumental and probably never will be without serious eqing with something like the eq I linked in the other post, with that you can finely tune 21 bands as sharp and precise as you want.

Quick question off topic, but that link yu posted up there, I can download that and use it within VDJ? If so how can i?

You need VDJ Pro running on window's OS. Then you can just put the .dll in the virtuadj --> plugins --> sound effects folder
