Topic: No AUTO GAIN for MP4 files?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I've noticed that although the MP3 files are correctly normalized by VirtualDJ, the AUTO GAIN function does not work (noticably) for MP4 files. Is this a software limitation or is something "off" on my computer?

i use alot of mp4 file and autogain works for me. VDJ dosnt actually normalize. Plus i use mp3gain with the AAC mod for mp4 files

So do I. But still I notice some MP4 tracks (where I did not apply aacGain) sounded louder... meaning: VirtualDJ is not normalizing (auto Gain) those tracks...

How loud a song sounds, and how "loud" it actually is, are two completely different things.

Normalization of an audio tracks means that it's highest volume peak is 0db
However normalized tracks can and will have different RMS volume values. Also, modern tracks tend to sound louder and louder than older tracks due to heavy compression. All these tracks are normalized.

The auto-gain feature in VirtualDj is a "normalize" mechanism. It doesn't try to match RMS values.

That must be it. Once again: thanks Phantom! :)

i might need to be schooled? I was under the impression vdj auto-gain was the same as turning up the gain on a mixer channel...in my experience with d.a.w's when u normalize it brings all frequencies to zero. when done to a complete recording it even brings up the sounds that were not recorded to be loud like a flute playing with no backing to zero in most case distorting the sound...Auto-gain is a gain in volume set at 0db leaving file as recorded but volume levels brought up to 0db. Meaning the solo flute will remain soft and low as recorded. Or i have it wrong and a gain control is a normalizer also.

Yes, auto-gain on VirtualDj is like turning up (or down) the gain knob on a mixer in order to bring the loudest part of the track to 0db.

In a DAW, normalization does exactly the same thing. It will not not bring "all frequencies" to zero. It will bring the loudest part/peak of the track to zero.
COMPRESSION is what will make the quiet parts sound louder while it will keep the loud parts loud and if it's not used properly it can add distortion or other artifacts

PS: In a DAW you should always normalize the master mix output, NOT each element/sound of the mix!
If you normalize your mix elements then you should re-adjust your mixer volumes to avoid distortion and level the instruments.

@Phontom thanks for the schooling....

I use ddvideo video to mp4gain to gain my video and audio files .I normalize my all video and audio files at the same sound level(98db,)
Of cause,you can select output volume from 75db to 105db.very great!
