Topic: Is there a limit to how many USB MIDI devices I can use at one time?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

So I am in the process of getting a new hardware setup.
2 Denon DN-S3700 Digital Turnable/CD decks (buying them as soon as I get my tax return)
1 Pioneer DJM-2000 Mixer (already have it and currently using it as an external mixer split-mono until I get the Denons)
A pair of Novation Dicers (for hot cues and samples)
1 Pioneer RMX-1000 (which doesn't really matter because I don't see a reason to plug it into VDJ. Not so far anyway lol)

Would all of these devices be able to work together with VDJ at the same time or do I need to scratch the Novation Dicers off of my to-buy list?

you can use as many as you can plug in providing you have a way to differentiate between devices, eg. Sysex or driver names

Is there any particular reason you're going for the S3700s and not the newer S3900s?

Thank you technz.
And the reason I am going for the S3700s is because they are more affordable and I like the fact that they have onboard effects, especially the echo/loop effect. Also the S3700s have 2 knobs (one for effects parameter and one for track select) which I would like to MIDI map to virtual DJ so that one knob is for selecting VDJ effects and the other control's VDJ's effect parameter. The only thing that disappoints me about the S3700 is that it only has 3 hot cue buttons whereas the 3900 has 4 but if I get the Novation Dicers they will eliminate that problem. :)
So with the combination of VDJ, S3700s, DJM-2000, RMX-1000 and my Korg KP3 I will have a ridiculous amount of effects so that I will be able to do some crazy stuff. I am already blown away by the effects and beat slicer on the DJM-2000 but my goal is to have a setup that is total overkill lol.

It is possible to run into issues with USB devices, depending on how many devices you may have installed in the past on that same computer.

People with lots of USB kit do sometimes find that they try and add another device and the computer won't see it.

It's something to do with the details of each device building up in the OS and being kept, even if the device is uninstalled. It can (in theory) get to the point where the the cup is full.

This is with Windows. I don't know the deal with Macs.

I am running Windows 7 Home 64-bit. So far I haven't plugged very many USB devices into the laptop. Just my VMS4, VMS4.1, M-Audio Fast Track audio interface, Axiom Pro 49 keyboard, iLok, a couple of flash drives, 3 external hard drives, and a wireless mouse. I think that is literally every USB device I have plugged into it. I probably won't even hook up my DJM-2000 via USB often. Haven't done it at all yet but I would like to later on just to see what all I can do with it. My main plan is to just hook up the 2 DN-S3700s (and possibly Novation Dicers) to the laptop and use them as MIDI controllers/soundcards and run RCA's from the S3700s to the mixer instead of also using the mixer as a MIDI controller. Well that is unless I decide to use the touchscreen MIDI functions on the mixer at some point.
