Topic: MC6000 and VDJ, question about controls mapping to VDJ

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I am just starting to switch to using the MC6000 and have some questions about how controls are mapped to VDJ.

I've just upgraded to the latest firmware v1.012

I've noticed that the MC6000 crossfader moves in VDJ when I move it on the MC6000.
However when I move the individual channel sliders on the MC6000, the corresponding sliders in VDJ do not move, Nor do the Gain knobs move when I change them on the MC6000. And same with the EQ knobs. When I move them on the MC6000, VDJ knobs do not move.

So that being the case, how are you supposed to know what is controlling what? Does the software have precedence over the MC6000 or not?

Is this normal behavior? I've not noticed any settings in VDK preferences to influence this behavior. I see the mapping page but I've not had any success trying to get the VDJ "knobs" and "sliders" to move when the corresponding MC6000 knobs are moved.

The MC-6000 has two different modes, internal (4 deck) where VDJ mixes the audio and external (2 deck) where the MC-6000 is a hardware mixer and has reduced commands in VDJ.

Sounds like you're in 2 deck mode, so in this instance what you describe is correct .... the faders, eq etc will do nothing however the crossfader will still function in the software if set to do so.

Let us know how you would like things configured, it can all be changed in the mapping settings.

Are you referring to the mixing mode switch on the back of the MC6000? Is that what switches between to two modes?

Yes, that's it.

OK I switched it to PC Mix and the volume sliders now move on VDJ but they seem to be reversed. When I move the first B volume slider on the MC6000 the left slider on VDJ is moving. It's like the left and right decks are reversed. and the EQ, Gain are still not moving on VDJ.

Hmmmm I restarted VDJ and now the EQ and Gain are moving but as with the volume sliders, they are reversed between Deck 1 and Deck 2.

Seems to have something to do with the skin. When I select the 4-deck skin the reversal stops. But I use a 2-deck skin and that's when Deck 1 and Deck 2 controls are reversed.

OK, this is messing with my head.

It's all a combination of skin, either 2 deck or 4 and how the Line switches are set.

By making sure that the first knob was set to MIDI, second knob to Line 1, third knob to Line 2, fourth knob to MIDI I think I've got my 2 Deck skin working correctly.

It's quite confusing.

So what's the reason I'd want to have Mixing Mode set to Int Mix instead of PC Mix?

Most users have channels 2 & 3 set to midi and 1 & 4 can be used for line in etc.

External mode uses the 2 channel sound card in the MC-6000 for output as a hardware mixer, in internal 4 deck mode all the mixing takes place in Virtual DJ and is then fed to the headphones and channels in the MC-6000.

Personally I prefer external mode, and unless you intend using 4 deck playback it's probably better left that way.

Keith, so you leave the MC6000 on Int Mix? I guess what frustrates me is that I like seeing the VDJ knobs spin when I use the MC6000 but apparently what you're saying is that when using the MC6000 in Int Mix, that won't happen and when it is set to PC Mix, the knobs on the MC6000 can be adjusted but in fact it is VDJ that is doing the actual changes and it is the MC6000 controlling the software but the MC6000 mixer is essentially disengaged, for lack of a better word. Do I have that right?
