Some good points have been raised. My backup equipment consists of another computer, another mixer, last resort I have 16 gigs of music on my Droid. If my speakers fail, I can have a backup set within 45 mins or so.
I posed the scenario I did because I have seen it happen. Guy with a laptop and a midi controller. His laptop goes poof and he was screwed. No backup. I practice switching to my backup every so often, just to make sure it is smooth as possible.
It would be a perfect world if everything worked all the time. I know a guy who uses a Toshiba Satelllite that must be close to 15 years old. He swears by it. I also know a couple guys who automatically replace their laptops every couple years.
I don't think there is an end all be all answer to the gear question. Everyone has a different situation and different needs and wants.
