Problem: When I am playing music videos or MP3 music, AND displaying text and/or a slide show, after a time, the mouse cursor 'disappears' & a small 'twinkling' appears in the 'center' video window. The mouse then has no control over the 'twinkling' except within the bounds of the video window. The current music/video keeps playing. The ONLY way to regain mouse control is rebooting. The CPU usage seems to be OK, & I've optimized the laptop. Any ideas?

It appears to be the hardware. The VGA output stresses the laptop. Crap.

Double check you are running a skin that matches your desktop resolution and not running in "Maximised" mode.
