Topic: Numark DJ2Go vs. Total Control - Page: 1

I'm looking to pick up a basic controller, but I can't seem to be able to decide between the cheap DJ2Go or the slightly pricier Total Control.

DJ2Go Pros:
- Compact. Smallest full-featured dual-deck controller I've come across.
- Cheap
- New

DJ2Go Cons:
- Very basic crossfade funtionality - no filters.

Total Control Pros:
- Bulkier (compared to the DJ2Go).
- Full featured dual-decks as well as mixer with filters.

Total Control Cons:
- Old
- Slightly pricier.

I only want to get one of these to get things rolling and eventually go in for a more professional system, but I still can't seem to make up my mind between these two.

Which one would you guys pick up if you were in my place?

Thanks!

i wouldnt pick either of those id go for the hercules MP3e2, the total control iv heard isnt that great. the dj2go isnt really enough to get you going, its pretty much a toy. some guys round here have them for messing around but thats about it.

The Total Control wasn't a bad controller at all for the price of it, but things have come along way since that was first built 3 or 4 years ago.

For a starter controller I would recommend something like the Mixtrack Pro that has an integrated sound card and you won't out grow it quickly. The 2 controllers you are looking at do not have a sound card so you will need to make another purchase anyway. The Hercules RMX is another controller worth looking at.

Whatever you're saying makes sense. However, the thing that attracted me to both the DJ2Go and the Total Control was the price. Even the TC shipped to India is just $140. The Hercules RMX or the Numark MixTrack Pro are both around $300 shipped. At around $300-$350, I can get an OEM "NX Audio" dual CD player and an entry level mixer for a wee bit more. Maybe that'll run me a total of $400-$450, but it's still "real" stuff. If I'm just going to get a "dumb" controller and leave all the work to the laptop, I don't want to spend more than $150.

The Hercules MP3 e2 is interesting from this point of view. It's got as many features as the Total Control, bigger platters and it's only $150 shipped! Very, very interesting!

There's another little criteria. I've only really played on a pair of Denon DN-2100Fs and played around a bit with some Pioneer CDJs. I still prefer the Denons, so I'd ideally like a controller with a layout similar to a Denon deck. Neither the Total Control or any of the Hercules things fit that description. The DJ2Go however, does resemble an old Denon DN-1800F, and that's another reason I was drawn to it. And, of course, you can't think too straight with a price like $85 shipped!

I think what I'm really looking for is either a pair of Denon decks or a Denon controller, but neither of them are gonna be affordable.

Sigh...

I have an icon idj as a toy, this is actually the worlds smallest fully capable all in one controller, I got it for 87 pounds from juno, there is no soundcard though, so you would need to get one, I highly recommend the NI Audio 2 it sounds great for such a small thing and around $100 those two and a netbook make the perfect miniature dj setup

@synthet1c the Icon iDJ thing does sound good, although a little KIRFy looking. I'm guessing that'll be around $200 shipped. However, I couldn't find it on eBay, so I don't think I can look at that! :-/ As a side note, the DJ2Go definitely has better build quality!

What other brands can I look at for entry-level controllers? I just saw an Ion Discover DJ thing...

http://www.ionaudio.com/products/details/discover-dj

Discover DJ Pros:
- Very good looking!
- Large touch-sensitive platters
- Cheap - $114 shipped

Discover DJ Cons:
- Only High and Low filters - no Mids.
- No channel faders - only one crossfader
- Only works with MixVibes, so you probably can't make it work with VDJ or Traktor.

Still looking out...

The Behringer BCD-2000 looks incredible. It has EVERYTHING. And it's only $220 shipped. Wow.

Is there anything you guys have to say about the BCD-2000?

I wouldn't go near the discover dj thing that looks like a fisher price toy LOL... I got the idj for 110 pounds/$160AUD from the uk express shipped (took 4 business days), its a pretty solid little unit, I wouldn't drop it to find out how strong it is, but it has a nice weight to it, the only con this it has is that it should have been an inch bigger so it wasn't so cramped, but still definitely worth the small amount it costs.

behringer stuff is always poor quality, the soundcard is really poor meaning your going to want another one from the start, you seem to be going up in price, why don't you start looking at a secondhand RMX

Gaaak!!!11 Didnt' realise that.

I'm calling it a night guys. I just ordered the Numark DJ2Go for around $85 shipped. If I really find that it doesn't let me do everything I need to do with the music, I'll consider getting something else. This way, at least I'll get that far!

Besides, since it's a controller, pretty much everything can be remapped. If I need high/low cuts more often, I'll use the A/B volume knobs for those and stick to using the crossfader for mixing.

I'll let you know what I think of it!

Thanks guys!

You should steer clear of this controller. Most users have had nothing but trouble with it, particularly the sound card part, which has a bad chipset and can cause crashes and freezes.

As a MIDI controller only (Not using the built-in sound card), it works OK for most users.

You know what they say about the things you're looking for being right under your nose? I guess the best place to find out about different kinds of controllers for VirtualDJ is, well, here:

http://www.virtualdj.com/addons/controllers.html

Found a really good controller here - the Numark DMC2. Not only does it look like any of those Denon DN-D2500 type players, but it actually has an LCD display for the track name and other details! It's fantastic, and I feel it's not exhorbitantly priced - around shipped. However, it doesn't offer any mixer controls. The other problem is that I can actually put down here for that cheap NX Audio real dual-CD deck pair which rocks USB as well as SD cards! Not that I really have wet dreams about playing an entire set off SD cards, but still...

Anyhooo... I'm still going to go for just the basic DJ2Go and see how that goes. If I make a few bucks off some shitty parties, I'll put down the and get the MixTrack Pro. Yay!

Fade out!

The Numark DMC-2 is no-longer manufactured, however some retailers may still have stock and you should find them for sale second hand, however you would need to purchase the full VirtualDJ Pro to use a second hand unit. The DMC-2 is designed to be used with an external DJ audio mixer in a rack mount setup.

The Denon DN-HC4500 is the nearest equivalent, but like the DMC-2 is also designed to be used with an external DJ mixer. Unlike the DMC-2, the HC4500 has its own built-in DJ sound card to output left/right decks to separately to the external mixer. You would need the full VirtualDJ Pro to use it.

While very basic, the DJ2GO is good value for money and comes with VirtualDJ LE included.

I'm not sure what to go for. Numark DJ2GO seems to be very good for its price and I am quite keen on purchasing one of those. The only thing that I don't like about the Numark DJ2GO is just the jogwheels. I prefer big scratch platters to jogwheels. Though when I went to an electronics store and took a look at the DJ2GO, the controller was bigger than I expected it to be.

I also have heard of the DJ Tech CDJ-101 which is cheap and has scratch platters instead of jogwheels though its not mapped for Virtual DJ.

The Numark Mixtrack seems very nice though I don't like Virtual DJ's EQ very much and I'd rather use a separate mixer. Though I don't mind using Virtual DJ's EQ. Hercules DJ Control MP3 E2 is good for its price and is only £30 more (i think) than the DJ2GO which is good, the thing that let me down about the MP3 E2 is that there is Pitch rotary robs instead of sliders.

I'm just not sure what to choose. Please keep posting for info!

Numark MixTrack is a very good controller for its price. Hercules DJ Console series are also very popular. A newer version such as the 4-Mx or 4Set will give you bigger touch-sensitive jogwheels and pitch sliders.

You don't have to use the mixer built into the controller. However, to be able to use separate outputs to an external DJ mixer, you will need to purchase the full VirtualDJ Professional: http://www.virtualdj.com/buy/index.html - Controllers that come with VirtualDJ LE can be upgraded at a discount (50% in the case of MixTrack Pro and Hercules 4-Mx, RMX or Steel.)

In that case, please register your Pro serial number on the page http://www.virtualdj.com/users/edit.html and then download the latest version from http://www.virtualdj.com/download/updates.html

5.1 sound card is not suitable for timecode use. For timecode, you will need a low latency ASIO capable card with at least 4 inputs (2 stereo) and 4 outputs (2 stereo), such as Hercules DJ Trim, ESI Maya44 USB, etc.

The inputs of the sound card in the link above are a mic (mono) input and line level input. Mic input is not suitable for timecode use, and given the low price of that sound card, it's unlikely to have ASIO drivers.

NOTE: For use with a MIDI controller with no sound card such as Numark MixTrack (Non-Pro model), Hercules MP3e2, etc. a 5.1 card is a suitable option.

...then how comes i saw a youtube video of someone using this soundcard with timecoded vinyls?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icwt1h-IZwk

you also mentioned that the mic input was a mono input. the mic input on this soundcard was a stereo input as it says in the product description.

I purchased a Dj2GO to use as a backup in case my Mixtrack pro died, but it can also be mapped as a second controller to use in a 4-deck configuration. Still testing at this point, but every button on the DJ2GO is re-mappable like any midi controller, and I've re-mapped the pitch buttons for triggering effects.

To be honest, I'm gravitating toward a denon controller soon to rpl my mixtrack, but if you want a simple controller w/o audio and a lot of flexibility, get a DJ2GO.

I just spoke to VDJ support about the 5.1 sound card. The person had told me to give the soundcard a try to see if it works.
