Topic: Fights In Bars

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Alright guys one of my gigs is a small town bar been there for 22 yrs got alot of locals and then we get these young punks that come in and cause trouble cause they think they are bad then they get there ass kicked. But the bouncer and the bar owner always let them back in well last night we had a fight again and the bouncer got his ass kicked then some girls threw there bottles at the bartenders and after it was all said and done they wanted me to keep playing the music and let them punks stay because they spend MONEY. I played for thirty more minutes then I told them I'm done playing for the night I got way to much money wrapped up in my equipment to let some punks destroy it

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So my question is what would u guys do and does anybody else have this same problem

I have all venues and clients sign contracts stating that they are liable to replace and/or repair the equipment if it is damaged by them or their patrons/guests. In a party situation, no matter what or where, you can easily have an accident... especially when alcohol is involved.

Protect yourself with contracts and insurance.

Agree with superaceman with the contracts. Also I would make known to the owner that you are not Dj'ing in a boxing ring or Octagon and if he wants you to keep dj'ing there that he needs to control his patrons and follow some guidelines.

Here is the thing, yes they spend money, BUT the more this goes on and the more people of this kind they let continue coming in, the OTHER people will stop coming and spending money. Nobody wants to go to a club and have fun when there is always fighting going on. The people will eventually give up and find a new place to go that they can enjoy.

ZERO TOLERANCE!

we have none whatsover for anyone fighting in the club even if they spend like it was water.
fight once - you go home for the night unless you make manager mad or someone gets hurt.
fight twice - you go home for a month unless you make manager mad or someone gets hurt.
fight third time - barred for a year with a Criminal Trespass warning.

we have had, and still maintain the reputation for having not just the best and number one club around, but also the safest, a club where you don't have to watch your back every minute and where everyone can come in and have a good time.

but if they can't see that what they are doing is going to cost them badly if they keep letting the fighting crowd then its time to jump ship and move on.

No better way to state it.

I love the zero tolerance rule that would be great I could see how that would work actually even thou I would like the second time to maybe be 6 months I am gonna have to see what the bar owner thinks of that he will pry say if you don't like it then later but Only thing his I know he will be pissed that I shut down an hour early but that bar had NO CONTROL at all the bouncer got his ass kicked and the bartenders are all females so go figure /i should charge him for security too. I am just furious cause of what all I do for this place then they let this shit happen all the time here lately

Zero Tolerance of nothing for me, if the manager doesn't already enforce it then I usually have a word and it's sorted from then on after.

To be quite frank it's beneath me to play to people that are badly behaved with no etiquette.

actually i like the fact that the club owner behaved. DONT GET ME WRONG. I don't want to say that those punks are ok.. they 've totally got issues but in my contry there is a bodyguard (in big clubs) where he hold a laser pointer and point everyone doing things that doesn' t like. For exaple if someone want to dance over a sofa or a table i think it is ok. So he walk around and say if anyone have different opinion than me.. is screwed. Also if the 'entrance guy' at the club doesn' t like your face you are out.. (there is always exeptions if ladies are with you). So i think it would be better if club owners thinking that way.

+100 on this. This the same process I do.

Ditto on the contracts. My booking contracts stipulates that any situation I consider to be a threatening I stop playing and the bar/club owes me the full fee. I have yet to enforce that clause. I have however, on certain occasions, have had bouncers kick people out.

Sounds to me like you need a proper discussion with the manager/owner as to whether you are prepared to stay. If you've been there 22 years its sounds like you're not the most demanding dj by behaving like a spoilt diva so they should be receptive to a reasonable concern for your and their business. As pointed out already they have a lot more to loose from a bad reputation and loss of other clients than a few that come to fight. Alos if the venue gets a reputation for violence you will get alot more attention from the police and then you get a reputation for this too! keeping more clients away and so it goes on.

Are the trouble makers friends of either the door man. manager, owner? - This could make things more complicated

Ultimately IF you did leave/move else where how many of the guests would move to a new venue with you - don't know if there are any other venues near by and if they would be looking for you to bring them a new set of customers.

There is no reason this can't be discussed with the manager/owner - don't make it as a big threat but it is worth remembering that a lot of djs can have quite a following particularly from locals that like you music/nights. You need to make them see a much bigger picture that it is their business and your work that you are trying to protect - its not that you are being demanding or wanting more money or anything like that - just a safe and enjoyable place to work with support from the management and door staff which is in everyone's long term interest - especially financially.

Good luck

All Good points....but the Bottom line is if the Owner does not do anything then you have 2 choices. 1) Leave and go find a better spot to play at. Like it was stated you dont know if your crowd will follow? 2) Stay there and hope nothing happens to you or your equiptment. Believe me if the owner / manager is letting these people in? You can bring up contract or talk all you want because he doea not care about you or anyone there. Its all about the Money to them.. Worked at a place liked that it took 2 shootings and the cops to change his mind. By that time the punks he banned from his club burned it down? Now I am not certin about that but it was to coincidental that the week before he got into a big fight with these punks? but I know how you feel...I was ready to move on...Glad I did because I would have lost all my stuff in the fire.....

Good Luck

as long as i am getting paid and the punks r not entering the dj booth, i could care less.
