right guys, had a request from a fellow dj and what he's after is this...
he wants to run a "live" show night at a local venue, which is fed, some how, back to the radio studio he broadcasts his radio show from, then broadcast the feed live on FM.
the output from the venue will be via the mixing desk (there will be laptops, cdj's and turntables in use).
the venue has broadband... RF transmission is not possible, due to both cost and geography.
i suppose what i'm looking for is software that can be installed on a computer taken to the venue which "broadcasts" the feed to software installed on a computer in the studio, which is connected to the line ins in the studio which then broadcasts it on FM...
anyone point me in the right direction to get this project started...

I have done this Si. I used my internet dongle (even better if the site has wifi). Set up like VDJ Radio but using my pc I am on to broadcast and not a server. Then get the studio to connect to that with one of their computers. Plug a headphone to phonon cable into the pc at the studio into the mixing board and your good to go.
Hope this helps.

I would take everything from the main board and run it into the 2nd laptop and then use a line on a deck and just broadcast from that laptop with VDJ. That's how I do it from home or the club. But I don't think that's actually what you want, lol, cause that bypasses the radio station, hmmm.........
I was thinkin out loud, lol!

thanks for the replies guys...still all confusing to me.
been looking at shoutcast...but not got my head round that yet...
the layout i have in my head is to take a line out from the mixing desk and pass that into the line in on the laptop(via the mic in???), this mythical software then takes that line in input and broadcasts it via the net...the laptop in the studio is then "tuned" into the broadcast (maybe by navigating to a webpage) and is connected via the line out of the laptop to the line in of the studio mixing board. Once in the studio mixer it can then be processed normally.

You got it.
You can use the mic in or better still use an external sound card and go to advance config and set one of the decks to line in, in VDJ.
Then when you got everything coming through on that deck go to record, broadcast and config.
set it for use this PC to broadcast.
set the amount of connections to 1 and set to auto start.
click on record. it will then come up with a web address you can give to the radio station to go onto to hear your broadcast.
hope this works for you

Hi,
you can't use the Mic as a input, it really sounds bad ;-)
If your PC/Notebook soundcard own a real linein, use it!
If not, you have to use a external soundcard with a linein
Guess the software you are looking for is Edcast on PC side, Nicecast or Butt on Mac side.

Are you sure that any laptop line in sound card will give high enough quality for a professional FM broadcast?
If it was me, I would at the very least use a semi-professional card like the maya 44 usb, or better, like the native instruments audio 4 or audio 8 or something.
Sorry I can't help with the broadcasting, but I'm thinking that you really want the best possible signal to start with since it's going through so many different stages before it finally reaches the listeners ears! :D

Just out of curiosity I just looked up shoutcast, I've been reading this...
http://wiki.winamp.com/wiki/SHOUTcast_Getting_Started_Guide
So it looks to me like you need to download 2 bits of software for your "broadcasting" laptop: the "server" and then either the "transcoder" for broadcasting a line-in source or the "winamp dsp" for broadcasting a winamp playlist. And then another laptop with winamp to receive the stream that you broadcast. After a quick 5 minute read that's as far as I've got I'm afraid, hope you manage to get it sorted.
