As one of the guys said earlier, some of these request just make me laugh. My eyes are generally closed when I make a mix. This stems from my vinyl days. Then, looking at some idiot on the floor that was off beat, would blow my mix, so I just closed my eyes. To be honest, The wave forms throw me off as well. The last time I checked, light traveled faster than sound, so how do you match them up in a club? That's why I use a monitor. I mean if colored lights is what makes you want to drop your money, hey that's you. It's not even on my list of features. To each his own.

And there it is, your opinion, while the majority would disagree it's still your opinion!

Depends on what you wanna do...........for ME it goes VDJ (for video) then Traktor ( cause Qbert says so and he's a scratch god, and this was even before any of this new Traktor crap).........you done yet??
But before there's any wave color changing going on I think the sampler should be showed some love, something we all can get some functionality out of........
Just Sayin...

A reminder before I post this - I do not work for Atomix, I simply help with the day-to-day order of the forum.
Sorry for locking the other thread but duplication isn't good for discussion.
One small point on this topic is that we have a wishes & new features forum and this has been requested ad-nauseum in there (don't open another topic there please) with responses from Atomix.
Wanting a feature because software X or Y has it is not a valid reason, and neither is looking cool IMHO. Request it because you need it for an actual reason. I'm not saying coloured waves serve no purpose, I'm sure they do.
Personally however they are of no use to me as I like to mix by ear and know my music and there are more important things that need some TLC!
As for all the discussion on the 'more popular' DJ software - that will always be subjective depending on your country and target audience. I'd actually say VDJ is possibly more common than other software in the UK amongst working digital DJs. I know an awful lot of bar DJs using it! if you need video then Traktor is out anyway.

I'd like to echo SBDJ's reason as my reason as well for not wanting the color waveforms.

What does #1 have to do with anything? Here's a novel concept, use what works for you best. Wow....did I think of that all by my self? Do you have the #1 car, the #1 cellphone? Everything you own is #1? Did you say "Why"? Serato is the #1 software because it has some colored wave forms? That's the reason? I guess you have polled every Serato owner, and came up with that conclusion. If you say so, then it is written. Let it be known throughout the land "SERATO IS #1 BECAUSE IT HAS COLORED WAVEFORMS". And the Gods pissed on each other, as they rejoiced with this revelation. Behold, the pee has fallen from the heavens, onto the Serato DJ, so he may see the colored waveform, and make a mix. Thy Itch be done, I will turn my head and cough, lift them, and Scratch.

I honestly couldn't believe my eyes when I read this post. I would expect every member of the community to flame you on that statement. I'm not even going to touch it, but I will address the topic at hand:
I learned to mix by ear long before DJ software was available and only saw a waveform when an oscilloscope was hooked up to the car I was repairing. I have learned to use the waveform to my advantage over the years to utilize track position and anticipate key components of a song. I have adapted and find it nice to have a visual representation of what I'm hearing but don't believe that colored waveforms will make my performance any better.

Colored waveforms definitely give you more information. When scratching it's sometimes helpful to know what the difference is between the snare beat or bass beat. In saying that it doesnt work well when the wave forms are overlapped.
I prefer horizontally placed waveforms as all the other programs I use I'm used to use the same principle. Mixmeister, Sony Vegas/Forge.

Well, while it was amusing to some and many can and will argue whether or not VDJ should implemented colored waveform it all comes down to Automix and their decision on whether they want to appeal to the new customers or keep the existing few and forget about the competition.
We all can sit here and rant about how much of a badass DJ we are and what we don't need to be the best but at the end of the day it's all about what makes your life easier, the same reason MOST of you uses a software over CD or vinyl which is a dying breath. I've never witness a profession were the professional wants to remain primitive and bash technology.

Well Paw, I reckon I might be able to tell the difference if I............wait for it.............it's coming..........POW "LISTEN TO THE SONG". Wait a minute Jethro, are you saying that if I listen to the song, I could tell the difference between the snare beat and the bass beat? Elly Mae, what did you and Granny do before software? Well, I can tell you we didn't have no fancy colors, by golly. Help me baby Jesus, we need us some purdy colors, so we can make a scratch. I know Granny, but Paw told me not to scratch it, cause it could get infected. That's cause you sleeping with yo sister Elly Mae, you know she got the itch.

Sarcasm helps keep you from telling people what you really think of yourself.

I personally would treat coloured waveforms very low in my list of priorities for DJ software.
Maybe the new breed of DJs need colours to tell the difference in sound frequencies but when I started 26 years ago my ears did the same Jon.
Maybe it's just evolution and genetic mutation ......
