Topic: Speakers

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I was also wondering what speakers I should get. Like I said, I just started DJing and I use a Hercules Steel on a Windows 7, 64 bit computer & I'm mainly going to be DJing small parties and things like that, but I don't want a wimpy system. Hopefully I'll gradually move up and do bigger gigs and I don’t want to have to replace my speakers pretty much immediately so I want to get a decent setup, even if it's a bit expensive.

I know active speakers are a bit more expensive, but should I go ahead and spend the money on them? What are the pros and cons of active vs. passive speakers?

Sorry for all the noob questions lol, but thank you to anybody who doesn’t mind helping me try to get started.

What's your budget?

Once we know how much you're prepared to spend, we can make suggestions.

Well. Should I go ahead and spend like $700 right now? Or can I get pretty good speakers without going that high? I mean, I'm not that worried about price, it it's worth the extra few hundred dollars to get something around $600, then I'll do it.

But, if I can get really good speakers that aren't that high, around $400-500 or whatever, that leaves me more money so spend on the other equipment. So, if you don't mind, you tell me, is it worth it to go ahead and spend the extra money immediately?

ld suggest the new DSR yamaha powered 15s, they are the best ive heard for the price range, definitely comparable to a speaker 2x the price, I know I have them the 2x times the price pair Evzx5a and I would say I feel the yamahas definetly sound Better

Sorry for not being specific, the prices I had mentioned were meant to be for a pair of speakers, not per speaker.

Sorry about that. Thanks though!

Bump? I still need a pair of speakers that isn't gonna kill my budget, but will be well worth the money and ones that I can actually do parties with.

In the $700 range you will be looking at the Mackies I linked to ^^ and Yamaha, Peavey, Beringer and maybe Harbinger.
Stay clear of Kustom, American Audio, Gemini, Nady and Gem Sound as these are usually very low budget and not really built to last.

I don't own the Mackie cabinets but I've heard em and they sound pretty nice. You're gonna get the best lows from the Mackie cabs as well.

If you have a "Guitar Center" close, stop by there and give a listen to some of the cabinets in stock.
Check your local craigslist for gear, you can find some good stuff, cheap.

Good luck,
T
