Topic: Altering the pitch by itself

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi all, I had an absolute nightmare at a wedding this Saturday.

All was well on the test when I set up and worked well with some background music but about 30 min in to the set deck one seemed to decide that whenever I loaded a track in to it it would change the bpm and pitch of that track and the one in deck two.

I tried to change the pitch back but it would not let me neither on the controller ( a Numark USB something or other) nor the laptop. I also tried to lock the pitch when it was at the right level but even though it said the pitch was locked it continued to affect the pitch and speed of BOTH decks.

The sync button was lit and would not let me undo it on both controller and software.

I ended up just using deck two for the whole night which wasnt ideal to say the least.

So. What can I do?

Thanks for the help

You may have turned on beatlock (SYNC button on the default skins is lit permanently.) In earlier versions of the software, this was mapped to 'B' by default and was easy to trigger by accident. It is now mapped to SHIFT+B by default. If it's on, turn it off by pressing its shortcut. If it's mapped to B then you should change its key via CONFIG -> Mappers -> Keyboard to SHIFT+B to avoid accidental triggering.

When loading a song, by default the BPM will be matched with the other deck. If you are using an external MIDI controller, this will mean that the pitch slider will no-longer respond until you move it to the correct position as indicated on the on-screen skin. If you prefer to manually beat match, disable the following in CONFIG -> Options: Auto Pitch Matching and Pitch Reset on Load

You may have also turned on 'smart play' - It's the small padlock above the PLAY button on the default VirtualDJ v7 skin. If it's lit orange, click on it to turn it off.

You can turn off smart play, smart cue and beatlock by mapping a key to the follows:

smart_play off & smart_cue off & beatlock off

This will turn off the auto beat matching features when you press it.

For basic mapping instructions, please see:

Very helpful stuff, I may well have presses B when searching for a song without clicking the search bar first by accident. I have now updated to the latest software (I think I was still on version 5?) so that shouldnt happen again.

I do however, have a question.

You say the following:
When loading a song, by default the BPM will be matched with the other deck. If you are using an external MIDI controller, this will mean that the pitch slider will no-longer respond until you move it to the correct position as indicated on the on-screen skin. but mine has NEVER matched the BPM, I wouldnt want it to, thats fine for a dance set but wedding stuff is all over the place BPM wise so that would have been a disaster!

So if they all do it, why doesnt mine?

You should check your keyboard shortcuts CONFIG -> Mappers -> Keyboard to make sure that this is not present. If you have been using an earlier version in the past that had this shortcut, it will still be present and will need to either be changed to SHIFT+B or deleted.

It may also be a good idea to delete or change any other single letter shortcuts that you do not use, so that you don't trigger them by accident (E.g: Trying to type a name of a song without the search box selected.)

The above auto ptich matching/reset options may be disabled if you have never used any other version except Pro. Other versions aimed more for home users will usually have these features enabled by default.
