Topic: NUMARK AXIS 9 + NUMARK M1 MIXER - HOW DO I CONNEC TO LAPTOP?

I'm planning on buying these two pieces of equipment and was wondering how i would connect it to a laptop, because i can't be bothered with burning hundreds of CD's.

They are not MIDI controllers so cannot interface with and control the software directly (The MIDI ports on the back is for linking to units together to sync them with each other, or remote control of the CD player via a MIDI keyboard.)

However, any standard DJ CD player can be used with VirtualDJ by using timecode CD's.

You will need a suitable ASIO sound card with 4 inputs and 4 outputs such as Hercules DJ Trim, Native Instruments Audio 4 DJ or ESI Maya44 USB.

Timecode CD's can be created yourself using the file downloadable from http://www.virtualdj.com/products/timecode/cd.html - Simply use your CD writing software to burn a couple of audio CD's using this file.

VirtualDJ Professional http://www.virtualdj.com/buy/index.html is required for timecode use (VirtualDJ Home FREE allows timecode to be tried out for 10 minutes at a time: http://www.virtualdj.com/download/free.html )

NOTE: Your computer needs to meet and preferably exceed the recommended specification on the following page: http://www.virtualdj.com/products/virtualdj/index.html

NOTE: If the M1 mixer is the USB model, then the USB sound cards in this mixer are not suitable for timecode use. They do not support low latency ASIO and do not have the required inputs for the timecode signal. They are intended to act as a sound card for keyboard/mouse or MIDI controller (E.g: Numark DMC-2) users.
 
God, very confusing. I wont consider buying this then, thanks for your information though.
 
If you are interested in switching to software instead of using CD's, then we would recommend considering a MIDI controller.

This is a much easier plug and play solution than trying to setup, configure and use timecode. It also allows more control of the software (Effects, samples, even song info display on some controllers.)

There are a wide range of MIDI controllers to choose from (Please see http://www.virtualdj.com/products/hardware.html ) and some can also act as normal CD players too.

Ideally you want a MIDI controller that also has a built-in sound card. This keeps things simple and you have everything you need without needing to purchase anything additional hardware.

Hercules DJ Console series are a popular all-in-one MIDI controllers.
 
Is VDJ not able to sync or slave to MIDI timecode?
 
No, VDJ is always the master.

To slave would involve the beat grid/audio adjusting live to the incoming tempo, which it can't do.

NOTE: Numark Axis 9's are not MIDI controllers and cannot control VirtualDJ directly. You will need to purchase the full VirtualDJ Professional and use timecode CD with a suitable timecode sound card if you wish to use them to control VirtualDJ.
