Topic: Cue point / database transferring

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I have a couple questions about how the database/cue points are handled with virtual dj

right now I have one pc that I've used for years to dj, and it has bpm's/cue points saved for a lot of my music library. the music library is stored on that pc's main drive (so if I'm not mistaken, the cue points are stored in the database in the virtualDJ folder in my documents). I have a secondary pc I take on jobs as a backup, but it rarely gets used so there isn't much in the database on that machine even though the music library is the same. It's time for me to upgrade my main DJ pc, and I'd like to start storing music on an external hard drive.

So here's my question: Say I want to copy this music collection from my DJ pc to an external drive for use on another computer.... how do I transfer the cue /bpm information to this external drive? If I copy the music to an external and have virtual DJ index the external, is virtualdj smart enough to build a database on the external drive that contains the cue and bpm info from my local database? or will it treat these files on the external drive as totally new files that I have to set cue points on again?

I was digging in the xml file some time ago and noticed that virtualdj referenced the path, filename, and size for mp3's. Say I move an mp3 to a different folder - will virtual dj still load the cue points as long as the filename / size don't change?

Also, is there any easy way to sync databases between computers? Say I have the same collection of music on two computers, and I set cue points for different songs on each computer. Is there a way to sync these cue points from each computer into the other's database? I haven't found anything so far, which is why I'm trying to move everything to an external drive.

ok - my DJ machine was still at the club when I wrote that message this morning. I did some experimenting when I was there tonight, and I answered my own questions so I thought I'd update this:

Instead of opening mp3's from the local copy on my main DJ pc, I tried opening them from the copy on the external drive I connected and as far as I could tell, all the bpm's and cue points still were present for the files on the external drive.

I connected that same external to another pc with virtual DJ and the same cue points/ bpm's were there when I loaded songs....meaning the database on the external hard drive had been updated with all the information that was in the local database on my main computer.

Props to the VirtualDJ team for implementing this in a way that is both practical and intuitive!

Yup when using an exturnal drive it will have its own database on that drive meaning you can still have all your info with ANY machine running VDJ, as you have already found out ;-)

Now for the stuff on you system drive you can move all that to an exturnal through VDJ. Just right-click on the files you want to move and click "File Operations" then click "Move", you can now safely transfer files any where you want and not lose the cue points and such.
