Forum: Old versions

Topic: Whenever I start VDJ it completely fails with a skin error and exits

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I would love to start learning to DJ. I love electronic music with every fiber of my being. VDJ seems to be obviously the premier program for DJs everywhere, and even has the second google result for dj. I have downloaded the free version for a quick look through, but whenever I start it I get an error message saying "error in the skin file (xml line 0)"

I would love to buy VDJ and start using it, but I'm having serious doubts if I can't even start the program. It seems this is a massive issue as googling "xml line 0" takes me straight to this VDJ issue, and I'm utterly amazed that there's hasn't even been acknowledgment of the program or a promise for a solution soon. Can anyone offer any solution on how I can open virtual dj and actually use it? I don't care at all about what skin its using. I am tech savvy, so I can handle complex solutions. Thanks guys! :D

(sorry for reposting. i figured I would get a getter audience here than in the skins forum. If someone could delete the other post that'd be awesome. :)

What version of VirtualDJ are you using and where did you get it from? You say the free version so I'll assume you've installed VDJ7 Home Free.

Sounds like you (or someone else) has possibly had a dodgy version on your computer previously which has messed with your system settings. Don't stress, your best bet is just to clean up and try again with the latest free version.

So:

* Uninstall the version of VirtualDJ you have installed
* Completely delete the "Documents\VirtualDJ" folder.
* Completely delete the "Program Files\VirtualDJ" folder.
* Remove all VirtualDJ registry keys from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\VirtualDJ and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VirtualDJ

Now download and install the VirtualDJ 7 Home from here:

If you're still having problems after that then post up and I'll then check some other settings with you. All steps of the above are important to ensure a completely clean installation.

The most common cause of this error is installing the software while logged in as one user (E.g: Fred) and then trying to run it as a different user (E.g: Joe.)

The other user is missing the My Documents\VirtualDJ folder. The program will not run without this.

To resolve, please either:

(1) Install the software as the user you will be running it as.

(2) Manually copy the My Documents\VirtualDJ folder across to the other user.

Another cause is installing the software without administrator privileges under Vista or Windows 7. Right-click on the VirtualDJ installation file and choose Run as administrator.

Also, we would recommend turning off UAC (User Account Control) in Windows Vista and 7: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-user-account-control-uac-the-easy-way-on-windows-vista

If that's the case, wouldn't it be better to have a more meaningful error message?

Something that says "Missing VDJ settings folder - please ensure you are logged on as the correct user and running VDJ as admin" perhaps.

Having it just fall over is not very user friendly. :-)
