what do you use ?

how good is it?

is it "in the cloud " ?

is the interface good ? is it too simple or too complex ?

does it slow you up or freeze you when it scans ?

I use Avast v5 Free, it\'s lightweight and has great detection. It's not in the cloud but it has regular updates. Just be aware that the free versions of most (all?) the anti-virus programs are strictly for personal non-commercial usage.

The interface is much better than older versions (ignore the letters over the menus, I was holding ALT when I took the screenshot):

edit: there are some av programs in the cloud but I wonder whether the network resource usage negates the benefits for on demand access

I use Avira :)

Personally I think it's quite good; simple interface and not too heavy on resources.

i'm very glad you were the first response Andrew ....

your posts are very well thought out and knowledgeable.....

i started this because i remember recently i mentioned that a grooveshark search result was flagged by Alwil ....

Cstoll said it might have been a false positive .... i couldn't track down the items in question , so we didn't resolve

that question .....i have been using Alwil for awhile now , i think 3 years , SkyFxl recommended it to me ....

today i decided to check Alwil with Panda instead of HouseCall .......Panda said i have 10 tracking cookies ?

HouseCall gave me the all clear .........

Alwil does have a better looking UI but i haven't used it much ....

i do notice that when it scans , it slows down the response on the computer , although what's coming out the speakers

and on the video screen are unaffected ....

my gig rig is Vista home prem 64 bit and 8 gigs of ram , an Ati grafix card 4350 1 gig ram

i store all music and video on the C: but not much else

i keep a back up on an external drive and the paging file is on the external also

this system runs well but takes forever to boot and shutdown .....

thanks SBDJ ....

and thank you for the text plug in , it's great

i definitely have a question mark in my mind about how much resources Alwil uses ....

recently maximum pc magazine had very unkind things to say about Alwil ??

You don't need to worry about the tracking cookies, they're related to internet privacy (browsing/shopping habits) rather than security. Even these forums utilise a tracking cookie in the form of Google Analytics.

There's only two anti-virus programs I've been keen on in the last 3-5 years, Nod32 and Avast. I changed to Avast when my license for Nod expired and I haven't looked back. The latest version is currently consuming 10MB of memory (and another 5 for the GUI) and has no noticeable impact on my usage whatsoever. I did a full system scan a couple of days ago which took 100 minutes to scan 1.3TB of data. That is quite slow but my PC was usable the entire time they scan was running and a full system scan is usually user triggered anyway.

Avast constantly does well on av-comparatives performance/detection tests and I'm very happy with it's on access protection which has spared me the pain of getting infected a few times.

edit: having said all that.. looking at their latest tests Avast scores poorly (11th place) at detecting the latest malware, even the Microsoft Security package does better!

oops! still got the Older Avast. Guess its time to upgrade! thanks for the scoop...

Personally, I'm extremely happy with Microsoft Security Essentials. I run a few different computers and I have always used AVG (made by hackers, also highly reccomended) until AVG was disabled by a virus. I used MSE to fix that issue and haven't had any problems since.

I also use Microsoft Security Essentials. Has worked surprisingly well for me. I however do not use any Antivirus app on my DJ PC.

used mse on 3 different machines both xp & 7 for 6 month without any problems :-)

I use Norton 360 v4. No problems with it, does a great job and a simple interface allowing you to put the system into "silent mode" which stops any scans happening when you're in Virtual dj mode.

Kaspersky Internet Security is my best friend.
Lite on my system, fast scanning, response pretty well on treats.

+1

I don't run antivirus.
Extremely careful what I do and where I go, but its amazing the difference in performance.
No more nagging bullshit, false alarms, quarantine's, scans at the wrong time, updates, or blocked actions.

For me, I keep the ability to restore available in case I get bit.
But, honestly if you don't download p2p or porn or email that isn't screened using a cable server, its very easy to get away from it totally.

For the rest of the nonsense I use my Mac which is part of the reason I got it actually.
It seemed pointless to buy some high power machine and then strap a monkey to it's back.
And that's not to open that debate, but just to illustrate my reasoning, and so far it works.

thanks rick

well .... i'm sure you are more knowledgeable than myself and pretty well everyone that's gonna

read that......but i don't feel very comfortable at all , about what seems sometimes to me

like a minefield out there of problems , some caused by viruses and some not , and also

i'm not that confident in myself detecting all the problem scenarios .......

i bust a gut laughing "scans at the wrong time " !

i'm not sure what you meant about restores , but i set a restore point manually (vista home premium) when doing anything

new ....

i find myself trying to protect my configuration ..... but it's not all viruses , new devices and software can change the

performance also
