Ok so I can see that many people have the same problem but no one seems to know how to fix it, I've tried everything everyone has said and still i get distortion when i switch it over to 2 sound cards. I have matched the hz and still get the problem so I know its not that. i'm using the Hercules DJ control steel and i really don't understand why they even sell this product bundled with virtual DJ if you can't even use it with an external sound card! I am getting very frustrated and I just want to be able to use the products I saved and payed for to its full extent. should I return this and maybe try and get a rmx, is that the only way to solve this problem? Also i am all up to date with my driver firmware and i'm on v5.2.2

any help is very very greatly appreciated! thanks!

Let's get something straight out of the way: Working with 2 soundcards is NOT and ideal solution.

It may work on some occasions, but most of the time you are trying to have 2 different hardware working together.

When you say you've tried everything, I'm guessing you've tried both selectiing 2 cards in VDJ , as well as creating an aggregate device in OS X:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1215?viewlocale=en_US

If so, and nothing worked, move on. Get yourself a dedicated 4 channel soundcard crated for DJ applications and spare yourself the trouble. You'll get to enjoy your time mixing and having fun instead fighting hardware. Yes, it may cost you a little more money than expected, but it will be worth it in the end.

Some suggestions:

- Numark DJ IO

- Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ

- ESI Maya 44 USB

Hello spenca1,

1) If you look for a technical help, it is much more efficient to

a) describe completely your configuration,
For Example: MacBook 5.1 - Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz - 2 GB RAM - Mac OS 10.5.5 - DJ Control Steel with 1.77 drivers - VirtualDJ 5.2.2 DJC - Sound cards: MacBook built it sound card set at 16-bit 48KHz + CMedia USB stereo sound card set at 16-bit 48KHz.

b) describe completetly what you did: when you write you have done everything, and don't precise in details what you did, it seems you are not mature to be helped, as your not giving the detailed technical information means you don't give anybody the information to help you, is is just a waste of time,

c) recover your calm. You have choosen to use 2 sound cards instead of 1, while Hercules recommend using a 4 or 5.1 channel sound board (on the packaging & in the manual), not 2 sound cards (the compatibility with 2 sound cards is possible, but it is written neither on the box, nor in the user manual), so if your choice has driven you to an audio issue, the normal process is to ask for help, not to shout you cannot "understand why they even sell this product bundled with virtual DJ if you can't even use it with an external sound card", since of course the DJ Control Steel works with a external sound card.

=> We may probably solve your problem, but it requires that
- you cool down,
- you take the time to describe precisely and in details your configuration and settings
- you take the time to desicribe in details and what you did,
so that we can look for your solution, and it will wok if your external sound card can synchronize with the computer built-in sound card.

2) If you want to set a multi-channel sound card in Mac OS, the setting is on my blog.
http://www.virtualdj.com/homepage/Made_In_Breizh/blogs/3567/Mix_on_a_multichannel_USB_sound_card_in_Mac_OS.html
and it works even with entry level sound cards as Hercules Muse Pocket XL LT3.

3) If you visit Apple forums, you will notice that Mac community is not used to explosion of frustration: Mac OS is a more peaceful world than Windows Vista, as Mac users normally look for solutions instead expressing frustrations.
It is legitimate you express your disappointment if you cannot use the hardware or software you have purchased, but not giving all the technical information to identifiy and fix the issue is not an efficient process.

first of all I do apologize i was very excited and had a party to DJ at that evening and i couldn't get anything to work. secondly i ended up ordering a Numark DJ IO to avoid all the hassle and i figure it will pay off in the long run. so once I get the new sound card everything should be fine and dandy, i wish i had bought it in the first place and not wasted the other 40 on the turtle beach usb but it happens. so again i apologize and thank you very much for responding and once I get it if I have any problems I will be sure to go about it in a much calmer manner! :)

one more question actually, my next step is turn tables and I've been reading people using time code vynals as well as cd's. how exactally does the time code cd work and what are some cheap good tables you could recommend?

thank you!

correction i bought the Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ there selling it bundled with TRAKTOR right now so I thought it was the best to get out of the three, figured i'd give it a try.

I just thought of something. Did i make a bad choice getting the Audio 2 DJ as apposed to the Maya? cause I was noticed that the Audio 2 only has the 2 outs on it, one for speakers and one for my headphones. Does this mean I cannot plug in turntables once i get them without buying another piece of equipment?

This is correct. The Audio DJ 2 doesn't have inputs.

ok and between the MAYA44 usb and the Audio2 DJ does their sound quality have much of a difference? because the maya is a bit cheaper but it has more imputs and the headphone jack.

I just experienced this problem for the first time. I use a Vestax controller for when I'm doing bigger gigs, but when i'm doing smaller gigs, i just use two sound cards. I have a Maya 44 and also a Creative Labs X-Fi Go Pro USB Sound Card. I like not having to use the Maya, cause i'd have to select a 4 channel device so i use the Creative since it's smaller and more compact. This week though I found that it all of a sudden became distorted through the internal sound card that I use for headphones. It so happen that i forgot that i had changed the sample rate of the built in output device in the "Midi/Audio" settings in Utilities. I had changed it from 41,000 to 48,000 and that caused the distortion. I knew it had to be something I did because when i bought the creative first, it worked perfectly.
