Topic: Help! Song list request for 13-14 yr olds graduation party

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hey fellow DJ's!
I have been asked as a favor to do this for family, Im reaching out for some tune lists and music suggestions for this young age group for their graduation party.I play mostly to an older crowd background music,anniversaries,weddings...
and really dont have much music that they might want to hear.I have suggested to my brother in law that his son bring in some tunes on his Ipod that I could tap into...but will they be clean? err..mabe.The parents will be there and I really dont want to get into trouble..if you know what I mean.Please..if you have a list already or can suggest some direction that I follow and not sweat whats being said in the songs..I just might be able to pull this off.

Party is in Connecticut on June 21.

Thankyou
James

That age group listens to mainly top 40 aka Radio Music. This chart should help you A Lot. Make sure you have just about every song on it because they will ask for them. http://top40-charts.com/chart.php?cid=27

Hope it helps. Good Luck!

Thanks for the site! well appreciated! got them all and open for some more tunes..! got to kill at least 3 hrs

Kids at that age like hip hop, R &B, Pop & dance.. Get the clean version of hip hop songs .. I dj many events for kids..

We did a party at the middle school and these kids surprised the hell outta me!! They were asking for all kinds of gangsta rap!! Almost none of the songs got radio play. Glad I have clean versions or else we might have been in trouble. Remember there kids so be prepared for anything.

I've got an under 18's night tomorrow... I'm crapping myself as I know it's going to be manic. I've managed to get a fellow DJ down to support me and just simply act as a buffer between me and the kids so that I can keep my wits about me.

We've got Skepta coming down for a live PA so I'm expectng to play a fair bit of grime as well as dubstep, D&B and all the charty housy dancy type stuff as well...

I must admit that the grime & dubstep scenes really aren't my bag, so having the buffer there will allow me to concentrate on getting it right...

Cheers,

Roy

I just did an 8th grade grad dance and the teachers had the kids make me up a request list. It's 150 songs, so I'm not gonna post it here, but pm me and I'll send it to you. Basically all the stuff on top 40 radio and lots of Justin Beiber (gag!). During the dance they asked for more slow dances than I thought they would. When I asked what slow songs they usually wanted Taylor Swift.

Don't forget the "Cha Cha Slide".

For 13 and 14 year olds I would suggest the Cleveland Shuffle over the Cha Cha...

Dont be surprised if you get alot of requests. Kids that age are actually quite pushy.
Best idea is to get a request sheet with a pen for the night and announce it on the microphone for the kids to write their songs on the list. It helps to so your not always getting bothered with stupid requests.

This isn't my entire music library but a large chunk of my DJ'ing library consists of a lot of carefully collected and organized music including,

Top 100-200+ of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000-2010, Blues, Classic Rock, Country, Dance, Disco, Funk, All time Top Requests, Motown, new wave, pop, prom music, punk rock, rnb n soul, reggae, rock, surf n summer hits, top 40, wedding music, bday music, childrens, and various holiday/mood stuff.

That's on top of genre specific stuff like house, trance, techno, etc.

That's pretty much standard staple for any mobile dj.

Thanks everyone for your help with the needed music suggestions. Its funny..as I was searching for specific music ..I realized I had more then I thought for some of the needed tunes on my HD! I just never had a request for them because of the venue style that I play to.
oh well..prepping for the party now so once again..Thanks!

Roy, I'm 19. I can tell you that allot of younger teenagers like funky house and songs that you can 'grind' too. Just listen to a play list of Tim Westwood and that's all you need really.

We all like the basic back spin, reggae horn and the old 'Head, Shoulders, Knees And Toes' song, followed by 'The Migraine Skank'. These will get us wild. Along with Boy Better Know IN DA BUILDING (Gunshot, Gunshot) I think it would suite the genre well.

I am grown up and not writing you a 'wish list' and i am saying this from past experiences.

Have a good one.

Cheers Danny,

The night went well (to a point...) Skepta was superb. Brought Shorty from BBK with him and did a good 40min set. I played a mixture of stuff upfront just watched what the kids reacted to and went with it...

After Skepta finished chatting to the kids inside he went outside and spent another good 15mins outside having photis taken etc, etc... This left the club half full as they all flocked round him. When he evetually left a few of the "just 18's or over" who couldn't get in, started picking on the udner 18's and a good old fashioned playground fight started.

As with any playground fight only a few were actually involved, but the majority just stand and watch. The difference here was that there was no "yard" so they all drfited up off the pier and in to town which left me with an empty club!!!

Still, got paid and had an early night ;-)

Remeber, the kids can smell fear!!! I have been doing school dances for 30 years as my primary DJ business. I have a number of schools that I have been doing dances at for over 20 years. There are songs that crossover at all schools and each school has its own special set of songs. Promo Only Mainstream should cover the majority of the requests. A lot of the urban music is just not appropriate for the 13-14 year old crowd. For my area cha-cha slide, cotton eyed joe, barbie girl, anything journey, perculator, baltimore club music, cupid shuffle, pop, lock & drop it, thriller, plus all of the top 40 mainstream and urban. Just listen to your top 40 radio station or check out their website for the latest hits.

Good luck

@Seana, yes it was... Also this is the club where I lost my residency!!! But now it looks like I'm gonna be back in on a rotation with the other DJ's...! Plus I'm the only one that will use a mic, so for PA's and events I'm gonna be the only DJ they can use ;-)

Cheers,

Roy
