Topic: Real-time BPM counter?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I have several mixes that have BPM changes in them. I was wondering if there is any kind of plugin that will follow the changes and show them in real-time? Since VDJ averages the BPM for the length of the track the count can end up being way off.

This is not possible with VDJ (nor with any DVS as far as I know). You'll just have to mix those tracks with wavering bpms the old fashioned way... by ear.

if you want songs to stay in sync you have to use DAWs like Ableton live. There you can adjust the beatgrid in different regions in a song.

Thanks for the response. I was talking about a counter like this one: http://www.pyramidedata.dk/autobpm.html. It's very accurate but it doesn't seem to work with Windows 7 x64. Even if you're doing it the old-fashioned way it helps to be in the ballpark first, right?

Update: I wasn't monitoring the correct channel. Now it works.

one day I would like to see an 'auto BPM' added to VDJ. would be useful for many songs.

doesn't it already have an auto-bpm counter??

you can scan your library and have VDJ store all the bpm data...though it's not the greatest real time BPM counter, VDJ also tells you if the song speeds up or slows down.

For me, it's quite nice because my Technics/turntables desperately need a tuning and tend to speed up or slow down on me quite a bit. At least it keeps me on my toes.

@ dizzyrocks

There is a program that can do it. Its called Tempo Anchor and its on M-Audio Torq.

yea i agree with this. Or least develop some sort of way we can adjust the beat grid manually. Maybe a suggestion for 7.0?

What would people do without seeing the bpm?? Kids now a days, lol...................Learn how to figure the bpm by ear and youll never have this problem. It only takes 30sec. Heres how to do it, count the amount of beats for 30sec then x's that by 2 and BOOM theres your BPM..........Pretty easy and it only takes 30sec.........just my 2 cents.

I do it in 15 secs and multiply by 4 ... ;-)

You have to get into the zone and FEEL the songs. I need to post a pic of my old SL1600. Talk about tempo change! Yes there was a turntable before the 1200.

I have much respect for the old school analog deejays, but since we're in the digital era what good is a computer if it can't do those calculations for you? Work smarter, not harder.

Because when the s**t hits the fan you'll still be able to work using whatever method is available to you ;)

I’m from that era… My first pair of turntables didn’t even have pitch control—I had to adjust the speed with either my finger or thumb to match the beats, which caused me to learn beat-mixing by ear. When the song that I was bringing into the mix was too slow, I would speed it up with my finger. However, when the song was too fast, I would place my thumb on the side of the record to slow it down. The reason that I’m emphasizing this very primitive method of beat-mixing is because your ears will never let you down and are the best “REAL-TIME BPM COUNTERS” in the world!

Furthermore, the BPMs changes wouldn’t matter if you could beat-mix by ear, which actually occurs with most of the old school music that I had to beat-mix by ear. I also didn't have the ability "back in the day" to loop only part of a song that had a constant beat. Therefore, it would greatly benefit you to read this guide by dj-in-norway and learn beat-mixing the "old school way":

I wish people would actually read the entire thread.. and not decide to go off on a weird tangent on how they are so cool 'old school' they dont need nor use BPM's for the songs..

the ORIGINAL POSTER WAS TALKING ABOUT A VARIABLE REALTIME BPM COUNTER!
Its a TOOL that would be useful, like many of the other tools that are included with VDJ and most other COMPUTER BASED DJING SOFTWARE.
