Topic: Id3 tags not updating in vdj

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Hi all,

I've just recently retagged alot of my music and I find my music is not updating. Is there something I need to do so all my files are updated. Note I havent changed the filenames only the id3 tags. If I individually click on file info for each file then click the ^ under the title and artist it updates them.... I'm thinking surely there must be a quicker way.

I have enabled read id3 tags under browser settings and also tried scan for tags.

Any suggestions? I don't want to delete my database and rescan bpms for everything.

Couldnt figure it out (not sure there was a solution) so I ended up removing my hdd from the search database and clicking check & clean under browser settings. When I added my hdd back to the search database and scanning for tags it worked and now I have all the updated tags.

Shit thing about the whole thing it looks like I have to rescan the whole thing again to get my bpms. Plus side is I havent lost my filter folders and favorites.

If there is an alternative method please chime in to help fellow users.

Yes, there is .....

Assuming you have changed the id3 tags using an external editor, all you need to do is select the songs in the VDJ browser (you can batch select) and right click reload from tag (or something like that)

It then updates the artist, title, comment etc from the tag but leaves the rest of the database info intact.

I'm sure this is explained in the manual somewhere ........

Too late by the looks of it...

It would be nice if VDJ automatically updated the ID3 tags or allowed you to change the ID3 tags from within VDJ. It seems VDJ has its own tagging system. For example, if you decide to edit the title in VDJ, instead of a tagging program, that does not change the actual ID3 tag. It just reads that way in VDJ. I don't believe you should change important fields (i.e. title, artist, genre) in VDJ, but should use a tag editor. The changes you make in VDJ are not permanent and can be lost under certain circumstances, such as when you use the Reload Tag function for that particular file.

This has been asked for so many times it's geting boring now .... and not going to happen by the look of things.

Solution is to update tag info in an external editor then use the reload info from tag option in VDJ to update the XML database.

For the record, the "reload tag" function on a Mac doesn't work 100%. Say for example I add "B.E.P." into the comments field of all 20 of my Black Eyed Peas tracks within iTunes, then I go go into VDJ and highlight all those 20 tracks and do the right click / reload tag thing, it's likely that not all of the tracks will update properly. It seems that if the track already had a pre-existing comment VDJ won't update it. What ends up happening is I have to individually open the "file info" for each track that didn't reload properly and click on the arrow next to the comment field. Not a big deal if I'm only updating 20 tracks, but what if I'm reloading 300 tracks? Cross referencing the tracks between iTunes & VDJ when updating a large number of tracks is a pain in the ass, and it's easy to miss some of them.

Hi all. I get my music from RPM on cd. Then I burn them in to I-tunes. But when I use the browers. It will not find the new songs loaded on I-tunes. Is this in the taging. Please help. I was using Torq before and it would find all my new up loads. Thank you for your help. Rick.

My tags are also not updating - I can get some of them by doing the batch reload tags if I have made changes in iTunes but it is also not updating the Key and Key number fields which don't exist in iTunes. Nor will it save playlists - so I assume it is something to do with the library file? I would be really grateful for some help with this thank you

Thank you - I checked all the permissions and they are all OK but I noticed that the database file is V6.xml not V7 and I have only had this problem since I got VDJ7 so i guess that is the problem! Can you please explain how I get V7.xml? Thank you

You are still using database 6.xx with VDJ 7 for now.. are you using iTunes for import on your files?

Yes I am using iTunes to import

Okay a couple of suggestions I made in another thread having the same problem,

In VDJ highlight the MYmusic folder and add to database, once that's done sort your browser by date and pick most recent on top were you will find your album track.. by import date.

If the album cover or file info doesn't show up then right click all the problem files and choose import from tags, some times you'll have to shut down and reopen VDJ after that it should show... Also to can import from "File names" if they are correct....

If they don't show the problem maybe with iTunes, sometimes the correction does not write to the files tags themself... To check quickly in iTunes right click one of the problem tracks and choose "open in windows explorer" if the name doesn't show in the file, then open with mp3tag and make corrections.... Link to site http://www.mp3tag.de/en/ It's free and unlimited.

One more thing you could try, go to folders from VDJ right click on the iTunes folder and click on "Reload"

Good Luck...

Thank you - I have tried this but it still doesn't save the Key and Key number - which are NOT stored as tags in iTunes - the rest of the tag updates ( comments bpm etc do save if i do the batch relaod so I think the problem can't be with iTunes ... Also VDJ stopped saving playlists when I updated from V6 to V7 so i still think it must be a problem with the v6.xml not having updated to v7.xml Is there a way to do that please?

There isn't a v7 database format. VirtualDJ v7 still uses the v6 database format.

Playlists and history aren't stored in the database. They are separate and stored in the VirtualDJ home folder as standard .m3u files (As also used by WinAmp, etc.)

Make sure that your user has permission to write to your VirtualDJ home folder and all sub-folders within it. Also, make sure that the Tracklisting folder exists (This is where the history files are saved automatically.)

Thank you and/but this is still not the solution - both playlist and tracklisting folders exist and have old files in them and I DO have the necessary permissions but no new ones will save and the Key and Key number field data is still lost everytime I close VDJ Any other suggestions?

Are you using a PC or Mac?

If you are using a Mac, then the VirtualDJ Home Folder can be in either of two locations due to changes that were required to be included in Apple store.

Check the permissions of both of the following locations:

/users/YOURNAME/Library/VirtualDJ (And all sub-folders) - This is new location. If you can't see/access the library folder, see http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/MAC.%20Reveal%20hidden%20Library%20folder.html

/users/YOURNAME/Documents/VirtualDJ (And all sub-folders) - This is the old location (Before the change)

You can use the registry tool to check which home folder VirtualDJ is using: http://www.virtualdj.com/addons/2170/Registry_Tool.html
