Topic: how to convert mpeg 4 to vob or mpeg 2? - Page: 1

This part of topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information

my hard drive took a dump. bought another and formated and now i have problems running videos as mpeg 4's. I tweaked and still no luck. Running xp pro. right now i'm downgrading vdj to see if i can find a version that will be better. is there a program (cheap or free) that i could use to convert?

try anyvideo converter. Don´t know if it can convert from vob to mpeg2,but it´s still a nifty little piece of software

Thanks, will try. I know it was mentioned on another board that vob and mpeg 2 were the same, so i only need to convert the mpeg4's. Maybe some mov files. They are also giving me problems.

If you convert any video from any format to VOB/MPEG2 you will create a file of worse quality than your original. If the original file is an MP4 (H.264/AAC), then you will probably create a video with a MUCH larger filesize but it will be of poorer quality. (Not a very good deal)

I just thought you should be aware of this issue and I'd suggest always keep your original files if you have the space. I personally don't use mp4 at this point but I'm sure it will become the standard in the future. It would be a better if you could get your issue sorted and NOT convert Mp4 to mpeg2.

I was hoping you'd drop in Renee since you are into this subject. Problem is I get all mp-4 movie files from 8th wonder. Everytime one of these files gets played I have a jerky top and bottom of the video out. It also does things weird to my lappy screen at the very top, sorta ghosting.

It seems like the video ghosts across my lappy screen at the top in little windows across the whole top. It seems also to blink every second click on vdj. I also notice that is also does it for vob files too but not as bad. All this because of a harddrive crash. Before this I was running over 24 hours of mixed video files without any problems.

then logically instead of converting a bunch of files, it would make more sense to find out what changed to cause this problem. ;-)

different video driver ?

8th Wonder uses MP4 (H.264/with AAC audio (Most of the time) and VDJ plays them fine on my (2) machines. For testing purposes I just converted an mp4 file to mpeg2 and the file size MORE than DOUBLED.

I don't think converting your files is going to be a good solution. I've never heard of anyone having the type problem you describe, may be someone else will chime in.

Hey DJ Doc Z

A Real quick fix for this type of problem would be to Restore To A Previous Point when your system was working properly and that should resolve the issue.

Trying to track down the specific cause of this issue may be very time consuming.

Good Luck

Was this an internal hard drive or external?

it was my internal hd so there is no restore point. only two things i can think of is as renee mentioned maybe the video driver or for some reason it was my upgrade to sp2, since i only used sp1 on my first hd. will work on this sat.

Have you got another machine you can run the vids on? It's easy to spen hours focusing on one issue when it might actually be elsewhere (been there a few times).

Also the running the vids from your internal hard drive and not the new external drive.

Try and eliminate all possibilities before homing in on a particlar issue.

Hope this helps,

Roy

Sometimes how you 'rebuild' the computer can create problems..

Since this is a laptop, I assume you used the Laptop's restore disks?
Who know what weird issue could have been introduced with a different hard drive and hard drive drivers..

sometimes just loading in the wrong driver can really mess things up, or missing a critical driver that you had before..

Also

sp1 VS sp2 shouldnt make much of a difference to baing able to play videos. Reliability? maybe.. but actual usage? no
Though I know a DJ who's computer stays with sp1 and he says he has never had a crash..
myself I run VDJ on my desktop with sp3 windows media XP (pro) & on my Rackmount with XP home sp3.
no major issues

1.) do a search of the forums.. your question has probably already been asked and answered..

2.) after you have done a search, and can't find the answer, then post your question in a NEW thread..

3.) dont ask unrelated questions in someone else's thread.. its considered rude.

4.) attempt to be clear and precise with what you want.. using puntuation is helpful.. This is not a cellphone, you ARE allowed to type more then one sentence.

When you replaced your hard drive, did you upgrade or just put the same thing in? Was the speed of the old one? Is your new one a green drive? What I am getting at is are the specs better or worse. A lot of the drives for laptops these days are green drives....translation slower.

Hey DJ Doc Z

Did you turn off the Restore feature in your computer?

I keep this feature on it's a life line in time of need, after a while you can delete the old points and just keep the recent ones.

Try the Videos in WMP and see if it works.

If it's just one format then it's the codec, reinstall them.

If you don't have quicktime installed, them download and install and that should fix the prob.

Good Luck

I actually do convert mpeg4 or any video format that causes trouble to vob. I do it since vob/mpeg2 easiest format for vdj to compute. I can scratch/spin back or spin forward two vobs at the same without skips. If I try to do the same with two mpeg4 coded videos, CPU gets very much more stressed which may cause skipping video/audio.I think one must have quite a kiler machine to spin hard both decks at the same time with two mpeg4 videos without skips when VDJ has keylock on and maximum quality settings.

Also I feel a lot more confident when everything is in same format (mpeg2/vob), less random crashes. Size does not matter as hard drives are nowadays very cheap. Ofcourse If I came across with original vob file ripped straight from DVD, I will replace converted vob with original. Usually if converting process is very good you can see almost no diffrence between original and converted vob files.

EDIT: To answer to original question, I use Xilisoft Video Converter to convert any video format to vob. It's pretty good program and You can convert in batches

@JAAKKO:

Yes the price of hard drive space is cheap BUT he's using a laptop which means he has to rely on USB/Firewire external drives for storage. One can only plug in so many drives not to mention the hassle of having multiple drives which can have it's on set of issues. If he converts all his Mp4's to Mpeg2 he will immediately double his storage requirements which is why this is not a good option for him.

If you convert any video from any format to VOB/MPEG2 you will create a file of worse quality than your original. The ONLY way an Mp4 could be the same quality or BETTER than an Mpeg2 file would be if the original source was from an un-compressed file. (99% of users won't have access to uncompressed video files, normally only the labels or companies like PromoOnly have these.

VOB/MPEG2 is a compressed format - some think that it's the video equivalent to an audio .WAV file but this is not true. So for most users the "top of the ladder" in quality is Mpeg2 and anything else IS going to be of less quality with the exception of what I mentioned. (Promo Only now offers Mpg4 files that were ripped from the original un-compressed files, from what I hear these are as good as Mpeg2 or better with half the file size) I'm still getting mine in the Mpeg2 format. I run 100% MPEG2 videos for the reason you describe but I use internal drives with desktops, where storage is not a issue.

Hope this all made sense, I got up WAY to early this morning. Yawn. :^)
