Hiya everyone,
I used to own some 1210s maybe 10 years ago and was thinking of getting back into the scene.
Im amazed at the advances now with cd decks. I was thinking of purchasing some cdjs, dont know which ones but when i looked at
people selling them on ebay a few said the reason they were selling was because they now use computer software to mix?
As im a complete newbie to all this new software my question is, do you need decks to be able to mix with virtual dj and the other programmes like serato? Or do you use the programme in place of the decks?
I will only be mixing in my bedroom so i don't want to shell out £1000 on a pair of new decks and find out i can do the same thing through the pc!!
The thing i can't get my head around is the fact that cd decks have the bpm counter on them. Where is the skill now in djing?
I remember the buzz of getting that mix spot on when using vinyl, what a feeling lol.
Anyhow thanks for reading, happy mixing people!!!

Click here for some information about VirtualDJ.
You don't need controllers per se with the pro version because you can do everything on the PC, but they do help to produce the tactile feel that manual mixing has.

Once you get bitten by the bug, you'll never go back. I've been dj'ing for over 30 years, take it from me. VDJ is the best software out there. I just picked up a controller today and can't wait to get it going.

Being able to beatmatch two tracks is an elementary DJ skill; thats never really where the skill has been in DJ'ing IMHO.

Its just a tool. Similar to when we used to pick up new vinyl and manually beat count the BMPs. Some DJs would write the BPM on the LP, others on the sleeve. This is just a easier way of doing the same thing.

thats true being able to beat match is basic stuff nothing fancy, its like knowing how to multiply 234 time 45 manually, people dont go wow cause of that, as sated b4 beat matching is a basic thing that all djs know... the real skill/ talent is in putting together great sets and the way you mix two tracks thats the creative part and the past that also demands skill not everyone can do that, not everyone can rock a party (in most cases its not because the dj did some crazy flashy things its because he got everyone dancing meaning he read the crowd and play a great aray of songs. you can correct me if i am wrong. but i am not

Thanks guys for all the info!!
I agree what you all say regarding djing is not just about beat matching. Seeing the new set up now with the modern day cd decks and now
software like virtual dj ust took me by suprise.
I am going to take the plunge and order a copy, thanks everyone!!

It's also worth noting that if you want to, you could simply use it as a timecode solution. That way you have traditional vinyl control, and use the laptop as nothing more than a recordbox. You could turn off all other skin elements such as BPM counters and waveforms.
