Topic: what do you set you "gain" to?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

I'm having a few issues with the volume of various mp3's (of differing bit rate) so I've got an easy question .........

do you set your gain to: Always 0dB, Always Match or Disabled.

I've been using Match, but I'm not sure this is quite working.

i go for always match & set gain to -4, that makes sure that when you play with the eq thhat the limiter is not kicking in, or if you've got it disabled that it doesnt clip

thx guys

Do you find you sometimes have to adjust the volume on each deck, or does the auto-gain work very well?

I've not really used it on a large system yet, just on my set-up at home so it's hard to tell. I've got quite a few of old tunes which have been ripped at 128kbs and the volume is fairly low.

I only use auto gain and NO LIMITER

= NO CLIPPING

i do have that problem too, minor as it may be. Does steinberg have a function to set volume to match each turntable when editing a file?

i suggest a program called MP3 Gain..you can normilize all your tracks to around 89.0 -92.o dbs and then auto gain on VDJ will do the rest...i always use auto gain set at always 0 dbs and i use the limiter

dont use limiter and gain at zero at the same time

will result in clipping

Dj-in Norway, there is a problem (clipping) with auto-gain to 0.
I have noticed this long time ago, and will "prove" it in the bugs forum.
I just need to finish my tests.
In the meantime i use "always match" to about -3, to avoid distortion.

the problem with using '0' is that if a song is recoreded with a db of -4 then the program has to make up that gain by +4 in the software, and frankley software gain sucks it distorts and thats all it does.
best way to set your gain is if you have all your tracks analysed pick out the quietest one and use that as your default gain setting then none of the songs will be played louder than the recorded level of the quietest one, meaning that there will be no software gain applied only software 'gain attenuation' which has no effect on quality.

-4 works good for me as most songs are recorded atleast alittle lower than 0db
