Topic: Music shows up "File Does Not Exist", but it's there!?

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

Ever since I upgraded to 6.2 I've been experiencing this problem. I have to actually go find the folder then manually insert the file. Some files that always showed up before are gone completely from the VDJ search/browser so I have to find myself it in the vastness of two 1 terabyte drives full of music!

What happened!?

Wow, nobody!

Try clicking config/browswer, select drive C and check, clean, fix.
Repeat for the other drives on your system.

Generally speaking, files that report as "does not exist" are files that have been physically moved on the system.
Lets start there before we blame v6.

C'mon Rick, I'm not an amateur here nor am I naive OK? You don't think that I would help other people out here all of the time if I didn't at least know the basics do you? I'm not blaming 6.0 and 6.01, those versions were fine. This happened with 6.02. Yet again, I'm not even blaming 6.02. What I AM saying is that since I've installed 6.02 this began happening.

So let's see now, 6.02 was released back when? Oh, yeah... over a month ago. So believe you me, I have attempted every possible remedy on the books as far as the software is concerned as well as seeing if my computer is the blame. So of course I knew to try the Browser tab and the "Check, clean, fix" options. I've done that and redone that. No folders have ever been moved by me or the computer. Many that are actually there are coming up as "File does not exist!"

When I get a file that says "Error" , I right click on the file in the browser, click on "File Infos", down at the bottom where it says "File Properties" is the "FilePath", below that it says "File does not exist!" So I read the "FilePath", trace it down in my computer exactly as it reads in the "FilePath" and lo-and-behold, it's actually there! No changes in drive letters, no file or folder movement, it's there exactly as it reads in the "FilePath!" If I physically insert the files in the VDJ player then they will work.

Another problem I'm having that I didn't have before 6.02, is that VDJ won't find some files at all, even if they are there and some are gone completely that used to be there. What I mean is some files that were there before 6.0.2 are gone completely from the drive. When I do the "check, clean, fix", do some files get deleted from the drive?

I haven't done any rearranging of my files at all. The only thing I've done is add new folders to the drive, not move or remove any.

I'm not blaming VDJ, I'm merely asking if anyone recognizes the issue I'm having and if they know what the deal is, that's all. This has been a huge issue for me at gigs because I know a file used to be there (it's on my list and it shows up in the history), I go to look for it and VDJ either says it doesn't exist but it's actually there or it's really gone when it used to be there.

Hey RuDe,

did you have changed ID3 TAGs (Covers) or rename the files?

Just a thought ;-)

See you
Haui

Thanks Haui, no. I haven't done anything to the files. I won't even put music files in my gigging hard drives unless they are properly tagged to begin with. When I rip CDs or buy mp3s online I make sure the info is displayed in the proper format minus underscores and dashes in wrong places, lack of capitalization and proper spelling among other things. The titles all look like this for it to even be accepted into my archives...

Michael Jackson - Thriller.mp3 They are input this way and never changed. I'm still at a loss as to what has transpired here. I am manually going through every folder in both of my terabyte music drives and reintroducing the files to VDJ.

What happens if you Remove a folder from the database then Add it back, do these files show back up with the info??

They should as long as you "check, clean, fix", but that still hasn't helpd VDJ find lost files, if they're actually still there I have to manually go get them and add them to the browser.

Create 2 filter folders using the below filters to find following types of files ...

insearchdb=0 --> In my database but not in Search (Hidden from Search)
ispresent=0 --> Entries in my Database, but not on disk (Error: files)

Hi all,

Gonna give this a bump.

I reported this recently in the General Discussion forum and had another couple of people pop up and say they have the same issue.

I have the two filters suggested above, the insearchdb=0 works perfectly. However the ispresent=0 does not.

I have at least 3 albums that are in this filter and I can drag the files from the filter window to the deck and play them, even though they are effectively "Not Present".

I have tried highlighting the files and then "removing" and "adding" them to the db. However still they appear in this filter...

I've tried fixing and repairing, have avoided a clean as I am still working through some file renaming I did recenty.

Any ideas?

This happens a lot. I have to open VDJ then open my music folders (within the VDJ browser) and actually go through and open and run through every folder then VDJ will find the songs. If I don't do this, songs in some folders will not be found in the search bar of VDJ when typing them in... or they will show up but it won't work because it says "File does not exist!"

Once I do this, I can literally find every song, but just imagine how painstaking it is to run through 4 hard drives with almost 4 terabytes of music, video and karaoke?! It will work for that day but the next day, I may have to do it all over again... and no, I'm not changing anything!

Is it possible that windows does something in the background when my system is idle, such as Windows Updates, etc?

I'm gonna take a closer look at the XML file. Now I know what tracks are dissapearing. I want to see if the notpresent is a flag in the XML record for that track and then see what happens if I change it.

I'll keep you posted.

*bump*

I might be seeing the same issue.. need to do some more playing around.

Happened to stumble across this thread...I have the exact same issue...and it SUCKS !!

I had similar prob, managed to get mine to work by doing:-

EXIT VDJ

1. Full Disk Drive CHeck ( Windows Explorer, rigt click drive, then tools, then error checking)

2. Backed up Virual DJ Database files
VirtualDJ Local Database v6.xml on all non system drives
VirtualDJ Database v6.xml in my documents\virtualdj

3. Start VDJ
Go to config/browser choose a drive, Then CLick Check, Then Click Clean, Then Fix
Once done exit VDJ,
If you have more than one drive then do the above again, remembering to exit VDJ after each Fix.

4. STart VDJ,
Select a drive with music on, and recurse the drive, might take some time.
Now Highlight all the Files it finds, and right click mouse and remove from database.
EXIT VDJ
Start VDJ
Select Same Drive, and recurse again, and select all files, right click and add to database.
EXIT VDJ

DO THE SAME FOR ALL DRIVES ATTACHED

Once done check to see that the files are there that were missing, they were for me.
One other thing that I found that cause a problem, was with a read only file, I got round this by in windows explorer, right clicking the folder that had my music in, and selecting properties, there is a button for read ony, make sure that it is not highlighted, if it is unhighlight and click ok, it might take a while.

If your music is in the root of the drive, there probably is a utility to do the whole drive in one go, you will have to gogole that i'm afraid. But on mine my music is in a folder called 'My Music' on each drive, then divided into folders from there so the above worked ok.

No guarantees, but it worked for me, just make sure you have a backup of your database files,

Nb You have to exit VDJ after each operation, I think it is because VDJ keeps the file handle open when file operation in use, and hence some system caching is happening, so when you exit VDJ has to close the File Handle and the cache with it.

If this is the case,, it might be an idea for VDJ to request a restart of itself when you click the fix button).

I tried this and it worked for me. Thanks for the help.

I think I finally got it. What I did was...I went to virtual DJ and right clicked on my main folder and pressed "add to search DB"

Please you resolved your issue but this thread is 4years old.

In future do not post in threads this old as much of the information will be out of date
Thanks
