Topic: Crackling noise when using EQ

This topic is old and might contain outdated or incorrect information.

hi,

recently i started playing with vdj and a midi controller and after a while i started noticing occasional crackling sounds appearing in the mix. after eliminating all possible likely causes, i found that this is what's happening:

1) the same thing happens with and without the midi controller, on both the internal pc soundcard and the controller's builtin soundcard, and also on a completely different pc (with xp, vs vista on the other pc) with all default settings.
2) start a track and play with the bass EQ knob (or any other EQ knob). the crackling noise will appear every time the knob is moved in any direction. (with some tracks the track itself will overpower this sound, so it's not always immediately audible, but it's still there.)
3) when any one of the EQ knobs is in a non-zero position, the level fader itself (or rather any movement of it) will also cause the same cracking sound. only when resetting all 3 EQ knobs to zero, the level fader will be smooth again.
4) the crackling sound is also included in the mp3 when recording the set (master output only - no external mixer in use!). that means it's coming directly from vdj as there is no hardware or drivers parts involved at all.
5) vdj version is 5.2 pro. again, this happens with vdj alone, no hardware controller or external soundcard or anything else necessary.

is this a known bug in vdj? i tried playing with the "performance" options, but nothing helped.

Disable "Safe Mode".

im no expert but i had a nightmare with this.

disable safe mode, set latency to auto, change power schemes, disable all non-essential peripherals etc etc never worked. went through a bcd3000 and nearly a Numark Total Control before i realised did it with the mouse as well. tried playing with hardware acceleration settings and buying a powered usb hub in case i was drawing too much voltage from the motherboard with all the usb crap i have.

even tried going back to xp as even on a clean install of vista i had alot of latency issues.

in the end, the pc i had gave up the ghost so i bought a laptop, loaded cue, still the same.

upgraded to vdj 6.0.1 and it runs flawlessly.

has it been running ok for a while then suddenly started doing it or have you recently just started using vdj?

theres loads about it on this forum, i would just keep plugging away, but if your not 100% pc literate like me make a system restore point or something before you start playing about with settings!

thanks, DISabling "safe mode" and "overclock" has fixed it (no idea what those options really do though, and no idea which of the two is actually causing the problems).

very strange, as the whole issue is obviously not related to the audio hardware in question, but those options claim to be. also the "presets" slider changes all other options in that dialog, except those two (and them being enabled is the default too). plus, from the sound of "safe mode", it should FIX problems instead of causing them.

re chunkymonkey: i think vdj has always been doing it, but the issue only surfaces when at least one of the EQ knobs has been used, which i never did before, cause it's a real pain to use them with the mouse. before i only used the kill switches (with keyboard hotkeys), and those don't cause any problems. only with the controller i started using the EQ knobs, and then i started noticing the problem. but while troubleshooting afterwards, i noticed that it's always doing the same thing, no matter whether the controller is in use or not.

i tried a fresh install of vdj on a fresh install of xp and it did the same thing right away. also tried it on vista, also tried 32bit vs 64bit OS, also tried vdj 6.0.1 trial, tried different soundcards, wdm vs asio drivers, even tried different skins, but the problem remained. seems to be a major bug in vdj with no straightforward solution unless you get lucky and happen to disable the right option.

Overclock:
Optimize the internal clock (useful only for old laptops)

Safe mode:
Safe mode lets VirtualDJ pre-compute a few seconds of the song in advance and send it to the soundcard buffer. It will prevent audio glitches if your computer suddenly starts a lengthy kernel operation, like waking up your harddrive. On the other hand, it requires more CPU every times you change the pitch, volume, scratch, or do any action. Don't use safe mode if you use advanced master tempo. (safe mode has no effect on ASIO soundcards)
